Default LT230E Problem. Oil??

I traded for a 1987 LT 230 a while back and it's been a ton of work ever since... every time I think I'm getting it into shape, I discover another problem.

My latest problem mystifies me. I had changed the oil when I got it and didn't realize that it had a replaceable oil filter. I ran it some after that and it ran well with no smoke at all.

Then I bought a filter and changed the oil and filter. I also cleaned the carb at that time and discovered the carb had missing parts.

I put it back together and it ran, but not well - and it was blowing white smoke like crazy. I got a used carb from a LT230S (since it has the choke lever right on the carb and my choke cable is long gone) and rebuilt it today, and put it on.

It runs, but not well and I'm sure the jet needs adjusting. But the worst thing is the white smoking - it's nuts how much oil it is burning. When the engine is running, the oil level in the sight glass (window) goes way down.

I noticed after I changed the oil filter that there is supposed to be an O ring behind the oil filter (part 14 at the picture on this page: Suzuki OIL PUMP - FUEL PUMP - LT230EH(E28) H 1987 - LT230EH(E28) - - LT 230 ATV QUAD - Spare-Suzuki.com: suzuki motorcycle parts microfiche )

But I found no O ring when I was in there. I didn't know it was supposed to be there; I just stuck the new oil filter in and bolted the cover on.

Could that have something to do with the smoking/oil burning that has just started??

Thanks for any and all help and suggestions.

Hmm, nothing eh.

I went out and looked and sure enough there was no o-ring behind the oil filter. I scrounged through my stuff and found one and put it in. It still smokes some but not like it was doing. I guess maybe it's just worn, but I've put so much into this thing already that I really don't want to rebuild the engine.

I also adjusted the jet needle to its lowest position. It's running well enough but adjusting the low speed mixture screw does absolutely nothing to change the way it runs. ???
