Default 1998 LT-F500F shutting down!!

I've got this machine that after 5-10 minutes of idling simply shuts off and is hard to start up again. Acting like a typical small engine ignition coil that breaks down after a bit, then after cooling down would function again. Well, changed out the coil to a new one, but , alas, no change in performance.

Any thoughts here before I go anywhere else? Plug is new with about 30 minutes run time...

All feedback appreciated!

Tom

Did the fault come on before the new plug was fitted? If not, put the old plug back in and try it. Also check the battery voltage with the engine running, a charging voltage of over 15.5 volts can cook the plug, and will burn out other electrical components if ignored.
Check the colour of the plug you removed, black and sooty indicates too much fuel, stuck choke or blocked air filter etc.

Default 1998 LT-F500F shutting down UPDATE

Hi everyone..

Pulled the fuel tank from the quad this morning and flushed it. Found debris at the bottom, plus gunk in both pickup tubes leading to the petcock. While at it, pulled the carb and disassembled as it has never bee ndone according to the owner. Giving it a good soak overnight and will reassemble in the morning, as well as replacing fuel and vent hoses. Will advise on progress (or not)...

Default '98 LT-F500F won't keep running!! UPDATE

Sorry it took a while to get back on here...UPDATE---

Did the checks on the electrical system per the service manual. VR, stator, etc. seem to be fine. Charged the battery at a trickle. Adjusted the valves to factory spec as I had another quad in the shop that wouldn't start at all (Got that running like great!). Figured that may help this one's condition. Well, it ran a little longer but still dies out after 10 or so minutes. Then again, will not start. Pulled spark plug right away after it died to see what, if any. spark was present. Well, it was bright blue and consistently there.

I'm going to remove the carb again and disassemble and clean it AGAIN.

Other than that, I'm stumped. Any thing I'm missing?

Thanks!

Tom

Start the bike and test volts at the battery should read 14v if not then its the stator. If its the correct volts then disconnect the negative on the battery. If it dies right away then it's the stator.

Do a compression check.

LOL Can't believe I didn't think of that. I always use a clear inline fuel filter so I can see the fuel flow.

Default FRIDAY UPDATE-LT-F500F shutting down

All:

Started the ATV this afternoon. Fired right up; reading initially 134.04 VDC at battery terminals when running. Let it run for two minutes and took another reading. Now I get 14.3-14.5 VDC. holding the probes at the battery, it begins to lose voltage, dropping slowly to about 12. 69 VDC. After a few more minutes it's holding at 12.55 VDC. Loosened the gas cap as I thought of a fuel vent issue as well.Removed the gas cap and continued to run. After a total of running 10 minutes, it quit and would NOT restart. As recommended above, I disconnected the negative battery terminal as it was running. It immediately began to falter and miss terribly. Shut it down and reconnected negative terminal. Started right up until the 10 minute mark and died.

Stator as recommended??

Ouch..It was like 500 bucks at the site I looked at. Hopefully you can find a cheaper one.
Maybe Ricky Stator.
