Update:
I grounded the spark plug and started it; sparked perfectly.
I checked compression; less than 30 psi with the throttle held wide open.

Conclusion: I pulled the top end off. There are noticeable scratches on it and the piston itself. So I'm guessing I need to bore the cylinder and move up a size in piston. I'd attach pictures, but I don't have them anywhere online to link to.

Here's a question I know has a reasonable answer: How does one get the ring snaps off the piston pin? I tried digging at it with a fishing hook and got nowhere. I'm sure there must be a specialized tool for removing them.

Thanks for the help.

First wrap a rag around the rod and cover hole into crankcase then just use small needle nose grab ring in notch, lift and twist out or if u have an automotive pick . You won't be using them any way. Be sure and check ur rod play up and down and side to side. Have whoever is boring cylinder to check bore size and how many thousandths to clean up cylinder walls before ordering piston.

I did notice that the Rod moves around. I don't know what to look for in terms of how much play is acceptable.

I'm thinking 1/8 to 1/4" of play.

I'm guessing there's more than a 1/4 inch of play. Now what?

Now that I'm home I'll measure the play on a crank.
