Default 2001 lt 80 starting issue

Hey everyone!

Here's my issue: when I try to start the quad, it turns over but never fires. I pulled the plug and it looked oily, and not dry. I don't have a compression tool to check that, and am wondering if there's anything else I should check before I buy a compression tool.

Any advice is much appreciated.

I would check the spark coming from the plug. You could just need a new plug.

Oil is pumped into the engine independently of fuel so check fuel is getting through. The fuel taps are notorious on the 80 (Suzuki taps only allow fuel through when running, except when on "prime") and those little jets on the carb can soon bung up with dirt.

I'll buy a new plug and hope that's the cure. I suppose I should have mentioned that I replaced the fuel petcock as well as deleted the oil tank and oil pump. I bought the petcock, and the oil delete cap from Midwest Mini.

So for sequence of trouble shooting:
1. replace plug
2. check compression????
3. pray for the best??

Here's the latest: I was hoping my problem was just a fouled plug. Turns out with a new plug I get the same results. I stuck my thumb over the plug hole and it was sucking quite a bit. I know that's not a technical way to check compression. The only thing I got after trying to start it was a big loud backfire. Mind you, this quad used to start all the time prior to this instance.

Any feedback/ideas are much appreciated.

Lt Granddad:

Nope, I didn't try that. I just replaced the old plug with a new one and it wouldn't start. So I should attach the plug wire to the new plug, then touch the plug to metal and turn it over? That's suppose to produce a noticeable spark?

Let's say it's sparking like it should. What should I check next? It's not even sputtering when I'm when I’m initiating the starter.

I'm almost to the point of pulling the top end and having it rebuilt. But chances are it might not even be an engine issue and I've done that for nothing.

Thanks for helping me trouble shoot this thing.

Proving spark will get us looking at fuel or compression issue. How long since last time bike was ran, possible carb blockage, might look into adding clear inline fuel filter.

This breakdown occurred last weekend. Up until then, the quad had been running like a champ with no issues. The carb should be clean. It's probably been less than 2 hours of run time since I last cleaned it. My fuel line is clear, so I can see fuel running down the tube when I switch the petcock on. I'll check spark over the weekend.

Thanks for all the helpful comments.

Could be flooded.
After varifying that you have spark, try applying full throttle to start it.
