well the story goes....
I got it and it wouldnt turn over with the starter. so I put some oil in the cylinder and a wrench on the flywheel and it turned . with just a little pressure.
then I spun it about 100 time slowly by hand.
cleaned the carb, hit the starter and she started right up.
rode it for a while and then decided to make it "better"
thats when the trouble started.

I tested the compression 3 times this month and all readings were over 120 psi with throttle open.
I havent taked the cylinder head off to actually look at the piston or rings or cylinder walls tho.

So...it starts when you manually "choke" it...right (putting fingers over the intake richening the mixture)?...If it idles fine when warm you might be chasing a rabbit with the whole pilot jet thing...I'd be focusing on the choke circuit...ensuring it's clean and ensuring the plunger stays all the way up when pulled up...

If that checks out and you're starting in cold weather you could fatt'n all the jets a bit to adjust for the colder/denser air or just shoot some SF (with upper cylinder protection) directly down the plug hole to get it going the first time (way easier than the 3-finger thingy...)

My $0.02

At this point a 20 buck ebay carb may be worth a try.

yes, it starts when i manually richen the mixture, I guess I always thought it was a vacuum thing but too lean makes sense too.
I will spend some time on the choke, maybe order a new plunger.
by SF you mean seafoam? maybe even just a squirt of premix in there would help the starts.
thanks for your input Dirt Devil.
cheers

DirtDevil101 was referring to starting fluid, not Seafoam. You pull the choke up it opens a passage in front of the slide to allow more fuel for starting.

ha... sea foam.

ok, im going to make sure that passage is clear in the carb,
is that passage in the choke circuit connected to the pilot jet?

Generally no...That's why you always hear folks saying they can start and keep a motor running with the choke on...once the choke is off it dies...that then tells me you have a clogged pilot jet and the choke circuit is obviously working...

Your situation is the opposite...idles fine after it's warmed up...but wont start when cold...

While I love Sea Foam SF did in fact mean Starting Fluid...sorry for any confusion...

yes sir, loud and clear.

I watched a cool you tube vid last night that explained that with a plunger type choke, its actually not a choke at all,
its an ENRICHMENT CIRCUIT!
just adds more gas (and air) through a spot underneath the plunger , and air through a spot on the side.
