Default Timing chain tensioner

I have a 86 Suzuki LT quadrunner 230 GE .Im wanting to adjust timing chain tension and I see some youtube videos that say take off tensioner reload spring and reinstall it release spring till you hear click and tighten lock nut this sounds pretty easy. Now the manual says you need to find TDC by removing pull start and turning magneto then loosen lock nut turn screw 1 turn and I believe turn it back 1/4 turn tighten lock nut. My question is do you need to get TDC to do this or can I just take it out reload it and reinstall listen to click or do it the way manual says? Thanks in advance.
