Barn find 2012 King Quad 400 ASi
#1
Doesn't seem like too much goes on in the Suzuki forum page but I'll try lol. Recently picked up a 2012 King quad 400ASI. A "Barn find" PO said the engine was locked up. 400$ asking price. So when I checked it over It turns out the motor did actually turn a bit both directions. It did have a bad starter, missing the muffler. (Some kid stuck a large can muffler on it). But overall the quad is in great shape. The real tree camo body is faded pretty good, but flawless plastics. it was tight and straight. Perfect brakes. So I figured I'd take the gamble. Has a title too.
The quad had apparently sat for some time going off the layers or barn dust so I was hopeful it was a case of just a little rust ridge. Got it home and sure enough a little rocking of the crank back and forth and a little oil it pushed through the spot and is spinning good now. Good compression and no funny noises. I had to order a starter. The one that came off was trashed something bad. Opened it up and the magnets were all busted up. Only 3 of 6 were okay. Positive brush was trashed. But I got it freed up and contacting. End result was it was just good enough to spin over the engine long enough for me to check spark and see that compression was decent. No pull start on this model but I think I can add one?? I'm feeling it SHOULD run if I can actually get it spinning over strong.
I do have some questions about this fuel injection. Namely. It has a choke?? It's definitely a Fuel injection quad. Fuel pump. Throttle body. Fuel injector etc. So why a choke lever?
Also. What have I really got here? I have never had a Suzuki or know much about them.

Fuel injection engines need a rich mixture to start too. Most use complex electronic controls that add extra fuel if the temp sensor reads stone cold, Suzuki just carried on fitting a choke cable instead. Excellent bike, engine slightly fragile, prone to the flywheel doing the same loose magnet trick as the starter, though they did eventually start fitting a tin shroud, which stopped the catastrophic failure that magnets hitting the stator used to cause. I personally find the autos a bit low geared, even in high. Otherwise, a better bike than the contemporary Honda 420.

I think by 2012 They had changed the flywheel? Atleast if I look at flywheels for the model the magnets appear to be the enclosed kind.
Low geared is fine I'm not light lol.
I have a 05 outlander 400xt I ride currently. I know this King quad is straight axle, though that's never really bothered me. I'm wondering if I'll like it enough to make it my main Quad.

My boss hates Can Ams so I rarely work on them. However he got arm twisted into fixing a couple earlier this year. Both were 400s from about 2004 and one had a Suzuki engine, 'tother Taiwaneese? Anyway the gear ratios seemed better but gear selection sloppy and notchy. It will be interesting to see which you prefer.

I believe can-am uses nothing but Rotax engines ? Atleast that's what mine has. And no doubt it took a lot of fiddling with the shifter linkage on the can-am when I got it. I finally got it in a sweat spot. It's been reliable so far, but there are some unconventional design choices I question on it.
Should have my starter tomorrow. Paid 20$ extra shipping for 2 day and on last Thursday. I get it tomorrow. Kinda got screwed there.

Well the gamble I believe paid off nicely. Got the starter in. Drained and put in fresh gas. After figuring out what it wanted with the "choke" lever. Down seems to be on however it wouldn't start with the choke on. It fired right up with it off though. And it does just seem to make the engine high idle when on, but it fired right up and idles perfect. Revs clean. No funny noises. Didn't run it too much as the lack of a muffler and needing a new battery.
