So you want to know how fast a KQ will go?

I had mine in the country this weekend and took a little 2 mile ride on a black top road. I noticed the KQ could get to 45 rather quickly then would slowly inch up to almost 50. I hit a little down hill stretch and almost got up to 55 and then my brain clicked in. I have a wife and 2 children and I would like to live another day. On the trip back I noticed that it couldn't hold that 45 up the hill. It would drop back to almost 40.

So I guess you could say the engine has plenty of low end but runs out at the top. Still it's a 600# atv with a 280cc engine.

It was nice to have the diff lock. I used it twice to get out of a couple play holes.

Rob,
I experienced something similar the end of last month. At an ATV Jamboree, I was riding on a flat frontage road going to a fishing hole. My KQ easily hit 40-45 at about 3/4 throttle. I haven't tried to "open it up" yet though but I plan to one of these days.

What kind of mods have you done to your engine? I've installed a Dynojet kit and K&N filter. That's it so far. I'm thinking of a SuperTrapp exhaust.

Flat stock. It's a '99 model. I add about 190# plus I've added about 30# worth of racks.

190# Rob? You're a lite weight! I weigh a comfortable 210lbs. My King, screams out of the hole but dies soon after. About 30 MPH she's starting to breath hard but keeps pumping to 42-45 MPH flat out. The carb kit and exhuast did do what I wanted(after market). She's got ***** at low to mid range but I'll never win a race. Do I care? Hell no! Everyones amazed when they see what this little jewel will do in mud. Some guys need those big bikes for security. This works for me...

Only 190 yes...but I'm 6'2" so maybe I add a little more wind resistance . 40-45 is plenty as you say. Besides you can't do 60 through a mud hole, up an 60 degree incline, over a 12" log, etc....

I have around 1800 miles on my Xplorer and probably 1300 of them are at speeds under 15mph.So the need to go fast is not really a necessity, but rather a convenience. Its just a hang up of MINE to have the fastest UTILITY 4x4 ATV in our riding group and to make sure everyone else knows it.I think it brings out the 18yr old in me?

Someday,I might turn 80 and change my ways!
