Late reply...
CDI stands for Capacitive Discharge Ignition. In a solid state ignition, where's the capacitive part? There's no condensor (capacitor), so why is it still called CDI? Why not just solid state ignition?
Anyway, yes, it SMOKES to top speed, but feels limited by something. I raced my friend (he's a small guy, maybe 135 lbs) on his newer YZ180 (yz?) and I was just ever slightly faster. For a bike that is that light, and being a 2 stroke, I didn't feel too bad about it. Once I figure out whether it's the intake or exhaust (my suspected limitations) then I'm looking at maybe a few hundred more RPM, and couple of MPH. But, the engine is SCREAMING at 55mph, so I'm not sure how much more I'm realistically going to get.
this seems to be a good place to learn about the history of CDI.

I agree with that. 55 does seem pretty damn fast on a quad.
BUT, it's not always about top speed. Even if your quad DOES go 75mph, it doesn't mean you have to go that fast. The power you need to go that fast is useful at slow speeds for spinning bigger tires in mud, for climbing steep hills in anything higher than 2nd gear, for pulling the fronts up to negotiate an obstacle, etc... Just because it CAN go fast, doesn't mean you have to. My jeep probably would have gone 85, but it would have been totally out of control. The power to go that fast was nice though, in the mud, at the dunes, and when I wanted to roost my friends.
