Engine problems W/1999 Suzuki LT80
#1
I have two Suzuki LT80's one of them from a dead start is a total dog. When you give it gas it acts like the timing is retarded. If your on level ground it will start out slowly and then develop similar top speed as the other one. Since I have two I'm able to swap parts. So far I've tried switching carbs & spark plugs no change in either quad. I've checked the exhaust and air intake no restrictions. Both machines have had the restrictors removed. I checked the compression of each machine and they were both about 135 psi. Does any body have any suggestions that may help isolate the problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
Check out the rear clutch/pulley assembly, make sure it moves freely, and will close completly, when I bought a used LT80 years back,it acted the same, slow acceleration, almost no power, but ok once it got to the top end. I found dirt and rust on the pulley sheave,so it was stuck part way open, basically stuck in high gear,no low end power, but once the quad ran far enough,it got to the upper range. I have even heard of some that didn't have the slots for the sheave to travel on milled out all the way,so it didn't have the full travel. Just cleaning mine out made a world of difference, just put a little moly on the sliding parts, and it ran like a champ. I hope this helps you out.

If you pick the back end up,does it free rev ok? Have you disconnected the air filter tube off the front of the carb to see if it runs then? wolv95 very well could be right.I would check the front clutch rollers, there is a great chance that the problem is in there. Are the reeds ok? the stock reeds tend to crack and break.I'll bet on the frt clutch or the reeds,,plz let me know
