on my 87 zilla i wanted to check the reeds to see if they are aney good. some dont close all the way just a little tiny bit of light can be seen. now when i bought the bike last month the guy gave me an extra cage with 2 big reeds on the top and bottom.now the one i took out of the bike has 4 little reeds on the top and bottom and looks better than the other one. if i go and get reeds for it if they are bad witch ones should i try to get?

Sounds like the one that you pulled from the bike is the stock unit. They are an 8 petal setup.
FMF among others makes reed cages with only 4 petals.

Reeds need to seal against the block. Sometimes you can get a little extra life out of them by simply turning them over. (But it's only a short term fix)

Personally, I'd get a set of Boyesen replacement reeds for the stocker, or if you want to upgrade, go with a Mossbarger reed cage.
I'm not impressed with the FMF setup.

Just my $.02
Hope this helps

What would one do in this case i been running the quad since thats maybe 50-60 hrs at the most, would i notice a big difference if i could get a nice tight seal around my reeds. Any info greatly appreciated THX.

Wow, this is a pretty old post that has resurfaced... I've learned a few things from when I was touting the Mossbarger cages.
I did some pretty extensive testing with the mossbarger unit, and when said and done, I sent it back to them... The signal response with my big carb was horrible...

As of today... I can't recommend them any more-so than the others..

Here's what I'm currently running:
For the '87 (big reed), The stock cage with some decent petals (No dual stage crap) either TDR or stockers... with ~3mm trimmed off the stops, open the stops so as they barely fit into the cylinder, and use a 3/8" spacer..
This setup works great! Not much $$$$ either.

I run pyramid's, because they came with it, and I am happy with them. The throttle response is sick.

It's a cage and petals. I had a mossberger carbon fiber reed and cage, but sold it.(might have been for an '87) I liked they looks of it more than the pyramid, although I am sure the pyramid flows more.
