This is on a 91' lt250r. I just got my motor back from getting totally re-done, top/bottom, the guy said everything in the tranny was good, but he put new seals in since the cases where split. I have had the motor out of the frame 4 times and was really getting sick of doing little things to it one after another so I had him do everything that was wore or need to be replaced. Well I finally started it up tonight. The gears work, but when I press the shifter down it does not come back up, i have to manually do this with my foot. It seems like a spring or something is missing.
What could be wrong??
I am really getting sick of this thing, Everything mechanically is brand new, I am thinking about selling the thing now that this happened, I have over 3k invested.

the shifter shaft has a spring that returns the shifter, the spring is located in the right(clutch side) cover, if installed improperly it may do what you're describing.

I took the clutch cover off today. The shifter worked great once I got the cover off. The shift lever returned to the middle position where it should be. I looked at the spring and didn't see anything obvious wrong with it so I put it back together hoping it would work like it did with the cover off. well it didn't work. With the cover on the shift lever doesn't come back to the middle, but with it off it does. I am sick of doing this s**t, I guess that what happends when you finally bring the thing in to get it done right.

Any ideas???

the return spring for the shift drum is located inside the left hand case. the cases would have to be split if this is the problem.
