Is the z400 faster then the raptor?

I've owned a DS650 since early Feb. and absolutely love it. I rode a Z400 this past Sunday and I must say that it is an awesome quad. Good power, great handling, and flies nice too. I didn't jump it very much since it wasn't mine and was brand new, although the owner (who was riding my DS) said that he didn't mind. He also loved my DS and couldn't believe the suspension and power it has. Like people here have said already, It's all about what you want... It's your money, so who's business is it what quad you spend it on... Just make sure to try them all out before you go and spend over 5.5 - 12 grand. You don't want to regret it after you pony up that kind of dough. BTW, I also think the Yamahas, Dales, and Hondas are ALL awesome quads. Just look at all of the choices that we have now! I can't wait to see what the next couple of years have in store!

Hey, I've owned three Raptors, one of them loaded! But I really feel I upgraded BIGTIME when I purchased my Z400. It is so close in power stock to stock that a raptor can't touch it unless all there is, is straight-a-ways.lol.. It feels so much lighter, much less tippy, and way faster on the track. I'm sure the 450 kit will out perform the stock 660 in a drag even then still lacking a couple hundred cc's. My CRF450/Lonestar quad is supposed to have about 51-53 HP out of a 450cc motor. The Z400 could be close someday with the right kit.

Anyone with a Z gone out to Sand Mt. NV and gone up some of the steepest dunes?
I know the DS, Raptor, Banshee can make it up them but, interested in how the Z does climbing these steep dunes.
Sand robs torque from a quad so the bigger bores do well but, I would like to get a more powerful quad for my wife and like the Z but, I want to be able to get on it every once ane a while and know I can climb a steep dune.
As for all the what quad is faster stuff, I wouldn't be supprised to see a Raptor and a Z and for that matter a DS be close to eachother on flat hard packed surface with good traction but, get these quads in the sand going up a long steep mountain of sand and there will be considerable separation between the quads.
As for prices in Northern CA: Z400 approx. $6500 OTD / Raptor $7700 OTD / DS-Baja $7700 OTD. The Yamaha dealers in town are all firm on their price. They have demand and don't seem willing to budge on their price. The Z could probably be bought for around $6k from what I hear and the Bombardier DS Baja about $7600. All these prices are Out the door (including freight, set-up, sales tax, etc.) That is the only real way to compare prices since many dealers will advertise a price then throw in a bunch of fees, etc.

Hi Binfordw, I hope you are enjoying your Z400 as much as I am. I kinda was a little hard on mine today. I mx'ed the crud out of it, the Z400 handled a 65 ft. double with 15+ ft. of air with stock suspension just fine. It's pretty rad for a back up ride. Good news for The Faster the Better! The Z400 has plenty of Torque for your sand. You said you know that the DS, Raptor, and Shee's can make it up. The Z400 has more torque than a stock Shee but a little less hp. You see 2 strokes make hp but not much torque. Torque is what you need to get moving, horsepower is what you need to keep moving! Sand robs a lot of hp, but the Z revs to the moon. With a few mods this thing will have plenty of hp.

SoonerDuner, I can't make up my mind 100% between the Z and the DS. I am 38 yrs. young and something tells me that I might be happier longer with the DS. But when I ride the Z I love the way it feels and handles. The DS feels big and safe, but not that much more powerful. Also, I've had reverse and haven't had it. Do you feel as though you need it with DS, being bigger and heavier?
Thanks,
