Why put a twist throttle on your quad?
#1
I have ridden dirt bikes all my life until now. I personally like the thumb throttle and have talked with some people, that after switching their quad to a twist, that it actually screwed them up more often, especially if they landed a jump wrong or something. What do y'all think about switching to a twist?

I have been riding a thumb throtle for 2 years now and i love it at the track i tried my friends dirt bike at my riding place and I could hardly stand it I couldnt wheely or jump to well I guess you have to get used to it and with a twist throtle you get hand fatigue too

When you boil it all down, it is what you are used to that counts.
BTW I have never had hand fatigue with a twist. The wrist is able to take a lot more constant pressure than the thumb. It's designed for it, just try doing thumb push ups

Does thumb throttle have any advantages for people that have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome??? I always thought that this might cause a problem for people like myself ( Pro Typers ).

I prefer twist better. you have better control in corners and almost anywhere else. The only place that it can be a hassle to people who are just trying it out is in whoops or very rough sections of the track where they might hit the throttle by accident. But they are better for when your arms are tired, you can hold on much better, you are holding on with your whole hand instead of just a couple of fingers. Other than that it's all personal preference, if you've ridden bikes a lot then a twist might be more comfortable.

It's all personal preference!
I cut my teeth riding dirt bikes and the twisties work great!!, but I wouldn't have a twist on my quad for anything!
The engineers put a thumb throttle on there for a reason... Makes about as much sense to me as putting a twist throttle on my snowmobile.
I've ridden quads with twist throttles, and I find it harder to be precise on the control.
But again..... It's all personal preference!

I also do a lot of keyboard/mouse work and while I am not fully at the CTS stage yet I find myself needing to help my wrist with a massage often. With this in mind, I have not had any problems with the twist on a dirt bike or atv. Is the thumb an advantage over the twist for CTS? Not really, because the real stress on the wrist comes from just holding on to the bars and ,like someone has already pointed out , the thumb takes an important finger hold away from doing that.

I'm trying to decide what I should do as well as far as the Twist versus the thumb throttle. I guess I have small hands, and I have been riding for quite a while, I have used thumb throttle way more than twist throttle, but my thumb always winds up hurting me, and usually only after an hour! I find that when I am riding aggressively, my hand winds up higher (more forward) on the grips, making it hard for me to stretch my thumb down to the thumb throttle. This really makes it difficult for me to ride, and it definitely limits my riding style, not to mention how bad my thumb starts cramping. I don't know if I need some sort of extension, or if I should go to a twist throttle? I'm afraid that the extension will just make it worse, as when my hand is forward on the grips when riding aggressively, I have to really stretch my thumb down to reach the throttle. Any help would be appreciated, as I have my Raptor in the shop right now, and I am thinking about calling them and asking them to install a twist throttle or something that would help.

If you are seriously thinking about getting a twist throttle then you should get one that is able to turn more, such as 1/2 or even 3/4 turn if you can find one. I believe the motion pro whirlpool throttle kits for quads have the most, with the cr next and the new vortex with the least. The Vortex throttle will only turn 1/4 twist which pretty much means you are at no throttle or wide open. This would make situations more difficult for someone just starting out with a twist. Yet their short twist makes them very good for MX.
