smoking lt230
#1
My lt230 is blowing liquid oil out the exhaust. The cylinder and rings are in good shape (rings are new) but it still blows out oil. I am going to replace the valve seals next. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Hey tom,
Would be a good idea to replace the valve guides...but one other thing that popped into my head...under the head bolts there is a washer...there are 2 copper washers and 2 steal washers. They have to be on the right stud when the head is bolted back down or it will cause a bad oil leak into the cylinder...that sounds like it could be your problem. Hope that helped

Had the same problem on my 86 LT230. It smoked VERY badly all of a sudden and got worse as I rode it. I put in a new piston/ring kit and had the head redone {valve job} at the local machine shop. I put all new seals and washers everywhere and put it back together by the book. It worked perfectly, but I don't know what actually was causing the smoke. I suspect the top end {valve seals and/or guides} as the piston/ring/jug looked real good when I tore it down. It is a fairly easy engine to work on an the whole job cost me less than $150 with me doing the assembly. If you don't feel like tearing down the cylinder, just do the head. It would only cost you a head gasket to redo it. Also get some of the Suzuki black silicone sealer for reassembly, it is terrific stuff!

I’ve already tore down the jug. I put in new rings and everything is within specs now but it still smokes.
SMS069 may have it figured. I didn’t notice the washers were different before.
Thanks for your replies

BTW, I’m also replacing the valve guides. I wasn’t going to, but the outstanding dealership I get most of my parts from sent me the guides instead of the seals (thought that was awful expensive for valve seals) so I kept them also.

any way to get more information about the misplaced washers on the head bolts? What is the correct way those washers need to be and will I need to change the head gasket?

take advise from someone who has had a 230.
just go ahead and replace everything
doing it one part at a time, it is gareenteed, to keep smoking, i am telling you just get the valves done, and the cyclinder bored, and it will stop, its when you replace it piece by piece it starts to have problems.
