Maybe the valves need adjustment.

First, I am assuming that you are getting spark, and you can get it running, but it stalls or does not idle. The stock Mikuni carb is a great unit. However, as they get old, the needle valve (and the whole choke and altitude selector mechanism, as well as the slide) wears out. once this gets beyond a certain point, there is really no way to adjust it. Also, on the side of the slide where the idle adjustment screw pushes in is a place where these wear out, and make it harder to keep in tune. A good carb rebuild kit will cost you about $35, and will have replacement jets and a needle. Pay attention to which groove the circlip is inserted on the needle valve when you put it together. This controls the main mixture.

A retail carb (new) is about $150. Stay away from ebay carbs, I have a few in the garage that are a waist of time and money -- unless they are new.

Also, check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold. If you can get it running at all, spray a little WD40 on the flange. If it is leaking, it will suck WD40 into the combustion chamber and stall.

If you are confident that this is all ok, the manual says turn in the mixture control screw all of the way in. turn it out two full turns. Start the engine, and keep it running until it warms up. Once it is warm, adjust the mixture until you get maximum RPM. Then adjust the idle screw to proper idle speed. You would be surprised how slow these thumpers run, and still idle smoothly. I am not sure what the idle RPM should be, but you can't tell anyhow.

Good luck
