leaking carberator
#1
I've been searching everywhere to find a forum where i could ask a question. I hope this works. I have a Sun L 250cc atv which is brand new (2007). Its one of those no name branders made by the chinese. I bought this for my 14 year old son, and ever since it was bought, it was nothing but trouble. All the problems have been fixed and I have one new problem that i need help with. My son noticed just last week that the air vent for the carb was leaking gas. It was gushing out and it leaked until there was no more gas left in the tank. Whenever the machine wasnt started, the gas leaked out of the carberator casing also. I took it apart and blew out all the crap that was inside. It still didnt work. I'm not sure if my floaters are stuck open and gas keeps coming through, or do i just need to buy a new carb? If you have any answers on how to fix this problem, please send me an email or reply on this forum. I NEED HELP!!

Well there is a "SEAT" in the shut-off that may not be closing all the way...........This is controled by the floats you talked about. (o-ring rubber seal may be out of place)....My buddy has a knock-off power Generator(china) that is doing the same thing.............He just put a in-line fuel shut-off in there for now until he get time to tear it apart......................But he needs to shut the fuel off first then let the engine stall out!!!!..........Just a temp fix for him right now!!!.......Caper...........

My '97 Polaris is doing the same thing. Leaks from the float bowl vent on the carb. I've never owned a quad before but I've worked on a load of engines, big and small, and every time I've seen this happen it's because the float needle is not seating properly or the needle seat is worn. An inline fuel shut off is the best bet for a low $$ fix. Shut the fuel off after you're done running it and the only fuel that may run out is a little that's in the float bowl. Be glad for the vent on the fuel bowl though, if it wasn't for that vent the carb could fill with fuel then start leaking it into the cylinder, which in turn will allow fuel to run past the piston dumping gasoline into your crank case. At the very least the oil gets thinned by the gas and you risk loss of lubrication and the engine seizing up. I've seen the crank case on a 18hp Briggs and Stratton fill to the point that the engine wouldn't crank over because the cylinder was filled right up to the top. Anyway, a carb rebuild should fix your problem if you want to do things the "correct" way. But it's a matter of choice. My Polaris has a fuel shut off so I use it, but I am going to rebuild the carb in the VERY near future to fix the problem the right way.
