Questions on shift cable to shift linkage

Questions on shift cable to shift linkage
Just got a 1999 AC 2x4 300 to work on foot shift cable will not let me go into gear plastic coating gone off cable. Want to no if there are any extra modifications to change it to the 2003 shift linkage before I order the linkage.
