Default engine swap

my son bought a 2009 ranger 500 efi. it needed an engine, he found a 2014 sportsman 500 ho carb. he switch the mag coil because of a different harness. it starts and runs but stalls after a minute of run or given throttle. he is trying to convenience me the cam needs to be change because the timing is different. I HAVE SEARCHED PART NUMBERS AND BELIEVE THE CAMS ARE SAME. I believe the difference is the cam gear to get the difference in timing. i told him, mechanical timing and electrical timing. Changing the cam wont change a thing. cant change the pickup, its fixed, the flywheels are the same part number, so the only difference has to be the cam gear. I also seen on you tube were a guy had a stall issue and it was in the cd box after a certain rpm. anyone got any input. cant tell him nothing.
