This is a first for me...I was GIVEN an abandoned trailer that used to haul two jet ski's. It certainly has the width and length to haul two Polaris'..I'm still trying to igure out its max weight for hauling. It has a 3600 lb rated tongue, single axle with smaller wheels on leaf springs. I'm in the middle of searching for some sort of ingraved capacity information on the trailer itself. But here's the real problem. Here in Virginia the Division of Motor Vehicles requires a title and vin number in order to issue a license plate. The former owner is no where to be found. Someone told me to go to West Virginia to get it done as they dont have strict regulations. Here it sits waiting for me to load me and my buddies Polaris on it...Any ideas?

 

can you title it as a home made trailer. thats what we do in this state

 

Check with your DMV main office about titling abandoned property.

 

I traded a police scanner a few years back for a friends trailer that didn't have any paperwork. Here in CA, I just went to the DMV, and registered it as a "salvaged" trailer. If you tell them you built it and as long as all the lights work properly and the trailer meets the vehicle codes, they will re-register it with new plates and title.

 

I also live in VA. if you regiester the vehicle as a homemade trailer DMV will send out the state police and issue you a vin and title to the trailer.
