Default Bad fuel milage on a Duramax

I recently just got back from the St. Anthony dunes and we took my buddies dad's 2005 extended cab 2500 duramax. We figured out that our fuelmilage was 14mpg. Thats garbage. We were only driving 60-65mph and we got 14 mpg. My dad's 04 F-350 powerstroke gets around 25mpg when we drive like that. is this type of Duramax fuel milage normal or is this truck just really thirsty??

25mpg out of a 04 powerstroke??? I would have to see that to balive it. None of the new breed of diesels get that. A 2wd reg cab wont even go that high unless you are driving downhill with a 60 mph tail wind. I know people that have all 3 brands of diesels in all sorts of diferent configurations and not one including myself would even dare try and claim that kind of milage in real world driving. It mite be posible in a best of best circumstances for a very very short distance but not on a prolonged inerstate run. I have the truck in my sig below and at best empty I get around 18-19 empty at under 65. Anything over 65 on any of the new diesels on the market and the milage drops like a rock. At 70+ mph I will get around 14-15 mpg empty. Afreind with a 03 Duramax is almost identical for milage VS speed as my Cummins. The older diesels where capable of the 25 mpg numbers 10+ years ago but not any more. Personaly if you where pulling any sort of trailer that caused any wind drag at all I would say 14 mpg is good. If your dads PS gets 25 mpg I would stay away from your dealer because people will be trampling any one in site to get one of those trucks at these fuel prices.

I just read an article in heartland magazine on the 05 duramax, allsiion crew shortbed and he claimed 22 hwy and 17 city. He must have been going down hill with the engine off. My 2004.5 2500 dodge crew,4.10s 4x4 8300lbs 22kmiles now gets 19 hwy unloaded at 62mph, 12 mpg towing 12k and 13 empty in town, which is all i drive.

a guy at work got a 04 duramax and he claims 20-22 on the highway with his, but i think thats a little over, i doubt hes ever figure it out. As for a PSD going 25, i'd like to see it not calling you a liar but the highest i really ever hear is about 20-22. My 00 7.3 gets 17-18 highway i got 19 once, intown with some highway to work everyday i get about 14 right now hoping it will go up more yet once it warms up more. Towing i get anywhere from 11-14 depending on load and how hard i get on her.

I have a 2005 GMC Crew Cab 3500 4x4 Duramax with the Allison transmission.

Empty on the highway at 65 mph I get 16.5 mpg.
Empty on the highway at 80 to 85 mph I get 14.5 mpg.
Towing a 40' triple axle fifth wheel toy hauler that wieghs 17,000 lbs, at 65 mph, I get 10.0 mpg.

25 mpg out of a Ford Powerstroke? Yah, right. , and I've got some property to sell. Anyone interested?

I have a 03 GMC crew cab 2500 that I take to the farmington dragstrip. It has water myth injection, propain, a quadzilla 215 hp chip in it and a modifide trans. I have not been out ran by a nother truck the intire time i have had it. I have also out ran almost every mustang i have raced so im not complaining about bad fuelmilage.

I have a 03 7.3 powerstroke crew cab long bed and I would love to see that 25 mpg! On my beach trip running 80-85 highway and some city driving at the beach I got 16mpg hand figured. I know that the speed I was going will kill MPG but I average about 16 all the time. I work with other people that have a powerstroke and they claim to get 20+ towing. These same people are notorious for blowing alot of smoke!!

16 MPG at 80+ MPH is pretty good. You're pushing an awful lot of air at that speed. If you can get that kind of milage at those speeds, You should be able to see 20 MPG if you drop it down to 60 or so.

I can believe that. That sounds more realistic compared to 25.
