Trailer help
I am looking to buy a 4 place trailer- Preferrably enclosed. I found a snowmobile trailer that I am interested in.
Its a 23 FT 4 PLACE GREY WELLS CARGO 2002 V NOSE ENCLOSED DRIVE IN DRIVE OUT TRAILER.
The curb weight of the trailer is about 3300
Hitch weight is 10-15%
GVWR is 7600
AVG. PAYLOAD CAPACITY(LB.) is 4300
I would be towing with a 1998 Chevy Silverado 4X4 1500 350 ext cab
the GVWR on my truck is 6200lbs The manual says I should be able to pull 6500lbs.
Now here's the catch, according to my Window sticker (it was still in the manual packet ) this truck came with a 3.42 axle ratio.
The normal axle ration- according to the manual is 4.10 or 4.56
What does a 3.42 axle ratio do for a truck? I mean it seemed to be an option.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The 3.42 will give you better fuel milage but will not give you as much power for towing. Somewhere in the Chevy literature - either in your owners manual or in the 1998 brochure - there should be towing figures for your engine/rear end combination. Bottom line is that if your truck can haul 6,500 pounds with the standard rear end, your 3.42 will make that figure lower.

I think that you wouldn't be happy pulling that trailer with 4 quads in it. Not only do you have the weight to contend with but your will have the wind resistance as well (yes, even with a V nose). A lot of people don't take wind into consideration when pulling an enclosed trailer but it really does make a BIG difference at highway speeds.
Good luck with your quest!

Pull an enclosed 25' 7000lb max w/ my '01 Chev 5.3 liter 4X4 Z71 w 3.73 gear ratio in the Sierra Mts w/o a problem, either towing or stopping. Use it for snowmobiles in winter w/ major snow & works fine. Keeps the equip secure when not being used
