02 F-150 Gearing Questions
#1
I have a 2002 F-150 with the 5.4 v-8 it also has a 6 inch lift with 35s and I recently bought a 21 foot toy hauler and it dosent tow it to well up hills about 35-40 mph but it does fine on the flat ground. I was wondering if thats normal and if I put 4.56 gears in it if that would make a big difference. Im pretty sure it has 3.73 gears right now. If anybody could give me any ideas on how to tow it easier I would appreciate it very much. Also Is it possible to get any better gas mileage than 5 miles per gallon.Thank you

Given what you intend to use it for and the size tire you are running I would run the 4:56 you mentioned. You will be surprised how much difference it will make in your performance and drivability after you do this. It will be like bolting an extra 100 horsepower. (exagerating of course) But it will be a huge difference.
This is the gear I recommend to my customers with your set up when they intend to tow with the truck also. If all you planned on doing was driving the truck on the street I would recommend a 4:33. For towing the 4:56 is the ticket.
Spend the money. You will wonder why you waited so long to do it.

I have an 01 F-150 5.4 V8 supercrew. I will be in the next few weeks purchasing an 5x10 trailer to tow 2 ATV's. This truck does not have any type of towing package to it. I'll have to tow it buy the bumper with a ball. I too am not sure what type of rear end I have. Everything is stock on it. Tires etc. Do you foresee any promblems. The truck is in excellent running condition. An I assume I would take it out of overdrive right when I tow. Thanks

The truck will have no problem towing that load at all like the above reply stated.
Purchaing a proper frame mounted hitch is the only red flag I see in the scenerio. You would be crazy not to use one. I can already see the tongue of the trailer sitting too high due too using your bumper.
Spend the money and do it right.

Transmissions nowa days are made to tow in OD.......... Your Ford kicks out of OD on hills anyways so it nots gonna be that big of a deal with that little weight........ I got a F-250 PSD and tow in OD all the time........ Ive been hauling probly in the hood of 10K in wood+trailer and it never kicks out of OD...... I'd tow in OD unless the truck kicks in and out on flats........ Unless you don't care about mileage at all then kick it out...... would it be better out of OD yes do you HAVE to kick it out No...
