Towing capacity: hitch vs fifth wheel?
#1
Dodge has come out with a limited edition model called a "Power Wagon" this year. I know, I know, all Dodge 4x4s used to be called Power Wagon, but this one is an off road package. It comes with 33" tires, electric lockers at both ends, 4.56 gears, and electronic disconnect front sway bar, and a 12000 lb Warn winch from the factory, and a 5.7 Hemi.
I would love to get one, but cannot find out the max towing capacity. The local dealer says it is 10,500 lbs, which is actually the capacity of the class 5 receiver hitch. If you go by that, then a half ton Dodge has the same towing capacity as this 3/4 ton Power Wagon model has. My current truck is a GMC one ton dually, and it has a towing capacity of 10,500 lbs by the trailer hitch, but has a fifth wheel towing capacity of 16,950 lbs. I want to find out if there is a separate fifth wheel towing capacity for the Dodge Power wagon. Where can I find it? My dealer just looks in his brochure, and wont look any further. If a 3/4 HD Dodge will only tow 10000 lbs I wont be able to get the truck.

I suspect you are looking at primarily a car dealership. Look on the net for a Dodge truck dealership in your area and talk with them. Big difference between the truck people and car people when it comes to special equipment items. If all else fails you can find factory customer service numbers to call and get the info you need.

Here's the towing capacity of the Power Wagon. You will have to select 2500 and then Power Wagon, since posting a link directly to the Power Wagon specs didn't work.

With a gross combined weight rating of 17,000 that would leave just over 10,000 of towing capacity as long as you only have a driver in the pickup (any weight you add inside the pickup will reduce what you can tow w/o exceeding GCWR).
With a 5th wheel or goose neck putting up to 20% of it's weight on the hitch, and a couple hundred pounds for the hitch assembly, you will likely exceed the 6,140 rear axle weight rating (or the 2167 max payload) before that, especially when you consider that in the real world you would likely have a passenger or two, plus tools, food, camping gear or whatever in the truck.
The Power Wagon was set up more as a off road capable truck than a trailer tower. Unfortunately lockers aren't available for the bigger axles that come under the Cummins powered trucks.
