04' 5.3L Chevy engine ticking
We have an 04' Chevy 5.3L Pickup that developed an engine tick about 2 weeks before blowing the engine at a ripe old 54,000 miles. Community Chevrolet in Meadville PA just replaced the engine for a cool $5000.
Anybody experiencing problems with theirs? My friend has an 03' same tick was remedied with Lucas oil additive at 99,000 when his developed.
As always, thanks for any replies.

The noise was very loud at start up and got milder, but never went away. This ticking noise did not go away even after the Lucas oil additive.
This seems like the same as my friends cold start ticking that would go away after a minute of warming up......except our truck's ticking never went away.
I must add, the truck most likely did not even see 1/3 of the oil changes it should have in that 54,000 miles. It was a company truck and I have first hand knowledge it was regularly "rode hard and put away wet" so to speak.
The truck got no love since it was totaled out by a 14 yr old driver on private property who was supposed to back it up near the building to wash it but backed it into the corner of the building petal to the metal. .........Yes it was reconstructed.

I know that a lot of the chevy engines have a ticking problem(slight tick that is caused by the hydraulic lifters)</end quote></div>
That would be my guess too.
If that is the case, it's not a fatal flaw. But it sure is annoying.

My Burb had the ticking in the morning which sounds like lifters/rockers but I have read and heard it was piston slap caused by too much clearance between piston and cylinder. That was needed due to excessive expansion of the piston after it heats up. I use Castrol GTX 20-50 oil and my noise went away shortly after using it. My buddy had the same noise on his Tahoe and he switched to Castrol and his went away also
If the motor was not already replaced I would suggest using a quart or two of trans fluid in the engine for a bit and then change it out. It really helps to clean the internals and will still help keep things moving smoothly. Cheap, effective fix I believe that motor has roller lifters and cast rockers
