Default Who is the King of the Utiltys?

Hey man I have a Bombardier Traxter XT 500 and a Grizzly 660, The Grizz is a really quick bike, it eats up most things that you can throw at it. Its got a ton of bottom end, I think its by far the best ATV i own, as far as top speed goes i think its somewhere around 68 or so, it handles great and turns well, it also has a lot of pulling power.
As far as the Bombardier, its always stuck in 4x4 and the differntial locks alot when you dont want it to. Its pretty vague as far as steering and handling goes. Its fast but it doesnt accelerate very fast. Its great in the mud (becasue it came with ITP Blackwater tires). It has a lot of pulling power it will pull a barn down. If your looking for a sportier Big Bore atv i would go with the Grizzly, but if you the utilitarian type that needs alot of pulling power then go with the Bombardier.
Hope that helps

Hey...that was a really good comparison of the two. I've been REALLY curious how that "Viscus Lock" front differential works. The Polaris and Bombardier both tackle this problem from a similar starting point. They both realize...you need fully locking....but you don't want and can't have it on all the time. Flipping switches and pulling levers takes too long. So let's have it lock automatically. The Polaris angle is...Let's leave it ALL off...until the back wheels slip, then let's lock 'em both up automatically. Personally, I never had it NOT lock...when I needed it to...but it stays locked for awhile afterward, sometimes too long. But rarely. My solution for that is...Trail riding...I leave it off. I want the back wheels to break.

Bombardier said...Let's leave it in "3 WD" all the time when it's in 4WD and we'll increase the lock like a limited slip, except we'll make it go all the way to "Lock". Frankly, it sounds great on paper....I would really like to know if it at full lock, what exactly is full lock. In big rigs....the most popular locking differentials are ARB and Detroit Lockers. Detroit lockers are locked ALL the time....no differentiation. ARB are full differentiation until you turn on the air compressor, then it is FULLY locking. Just like the Polaris, except it uses Air turned on by the driver. The concept of Polaris is tried and tested. The Bombardier design is promissing....I've just never read anything on this technology working in Full rig lockers. Unfortunately, I wouldn't believe any manufacture claims...I'd have to take it apart and see how it works to know whether it does in fact do what it claims.

It is intriguing.

My main problem with Bombardier....I don't like they way they look....it's too boxy and almost too much effort to look "mean". The second issue....too small. The dealer in town I went to, said that's why he carries Arctic Cats, because he doesn't have a "Big" Bombardier to carry.

Actually thats not true,,,,,a detroit will allow differentiation when there is no torque applied to the ring and pinion. Let off the gas going around a corner and the carrier will unlock and allow the outside tire to turn faster than the inside tire.

I like the polaris system for trail riding, mud and snow. However, I have found many times when the polaris 4x4 system has let me down. Those times when you need the front tires to pull you up or through an obstacle. Examples would be climbing rocks or climbing over big logs. You get the front tires up on the log or ledge and you need the front tires to pull you up. This cant happen until you give it enough gas to spin the rear tires and now you are out of control. With a full locking 4x4 system like a grizzly or prairie, you lock it up, let the front tires pull you up and over the obstacle. No spinning the tires needed and you negotiate the obstacle without being out of control wth a possibility of rolling over.

Like many of the quads out there that people here like to argue about, it comes down to what you want. Both systems have there pros and cons. Pick the one that works the best for your needs.

I am aware of how the Detroit Locker works....for the purpose of the topic, that fact wasn't important. Trust me...I've had my Detroit Locker wind up and go BANG, changing lanes with gas on. Always a challenge to keep it IN the lane you're leaving and the lane you want. It's really bad, when you ..let off the gas going into a turn...but WHO drives all the way through a turn without any torque?? Nobody. So you constantly get wheel hops or the dreaded....WHABANG.

And that's why I've gone to ARB in my ******.

And you're correct....both systems (quads) have +'s and -'s. I've ridden my Polaris on the Jeepers Jamboree (Rubicon) trail and haven't noticed my Polaris not locking when I needed it.....but that's just me....totally not indicative of what can happen.

The kind of Utility Machines isnt one machine, but all the IRS+Locking Front differential machines!! I own a grizzly but all the rest are very wonderful machines!! Though for my style of Riding the Prarie would never in its wildest dreams be able to compare or keep up!!! After saying that, SPEED IS NOT A FACTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I ride mainly at the Upper Tellico ORV trail in NC!!! I would absolutely love to see a Prairie follow me, any sportsman and any other IRS+Locking differentialed machine there!!! The kind is DEFINATELY DETHRONED on those trails!!!

Tellicogrizz660Im sure in that kind of riding (tellico orv trail) your grizz would surpass the prairie but in every other aspect of riding it would fall behind. Now im sure alot of your kind of riding has alot to do with experiance , get a good rider on a prairie he would probably go every where you do , but get a guy who hasn't rode much on your grizz and see what happens.
