you would probably be better off on a sporty. Only downside, is the chain and sproket ,and related clearance and maint, issues.
Of the 3 you mentioned, the bruin is the cheapest, and being an auto, its much more friendly to new riders. I know its kind of a macho thing to have a manual shift, but once you ride one, (that works good, like the yamaha), you wont want to go back to shifting your own. Then you could hand it down to the wife or kids when you move up to a bigger one.

I have a 2005 es 2 whd rancher, and I love it. I didn`t want 4 whd either and havent been sorry yet. The Honda shop talked me out of the 4 whd for trail riding. 2whd turns shaper and rides nicer. The rancher comes with full instruments and a cooling fan. The manual shift comes without a cooling fan.

My brother has an 02 BigBear and really likes it alot. He still loves to shift and the auto clutch setup is really nice as well. Most of the trail riding on the Bear is in 3rd gear in the tighter stuff and 4th when a little more open and then 5th when we get to a nice open spot. It is geared low and is far from a speed demon but he does get like 50 to 52 When he really is on it but no more. It has tons of lowend power and has pulled many up us hills that we go stuck on when hill climbing. He just pulls the winch cable down to our machine and hits reverse and pulls us right up.
All in all it has been bullet proof and with the in/out 2wd/4wd setup it really makes it fun for him to slide it around. Ride is not bad for a straight axle setup and the nice cumfy seat is also nice. He is never beat up at the end of the day even when riding on rocky terrain all day. I on the other hand die on my Warrior (well until I get my new Kodiak 450 tommorrow)

We are obviously not listening to him. He only wants a 2x4. He probably doesn' t want to pay the extra 650.00 to 1100.00 for the 4x4 option. So why buy the rancher or any other utility quad in the 500lb + category when you could buy the recon, ozark, bayou, or the new fendered bruin 250(formally the beartracker). With the lower weight you will be much happier than the heavier non 4x4's, especially if you get it stuck.
