The only difference is the plastic and the racks. The 400Sportsman has the Trail Boss plastic. The explorer uses the newer sportsman plastic and racks. I would go for the explorer since this would be a new machine. I think the made the 400 explorer up until 2001 or 02. The I think 400 sportsman disappered in 98.

My dad bought a 400 Explorer, I can't remember exactly what year it is, best guessing probably a 98?? maybe

I put that machine thru it's paces and so has he, but I really put it thru it paces because back then I was riding dirtbikes pretty heavy and sport quads.

I can't say one bad thing about that quad, it has held up amazingly well specially when you factor in my abuse and the machines cost!

The chain drives are a pain in the butt though, and I don't care for the single brake.....well I hate it auctually. 4x4 system sucks but those were all things that sucked before he bought the machine. But then he didn't pay 8freakingthousand dollars either

he contines to use the machine to this day and it goes just as good as it did when it was new. Only things that have needed fixing were the chains and I put a stick thru the belt cover so it's new but thats about it.

Oh the front shocks blew out when I jumped it a bit too far but it was still under warranty (Dad still things they went out when he ride it thru the hey feild over frozen gohper mounds I just failed to inform him that they really went out when I landed really, really hard off a big jump) I was such a punk!
