Default 04 Kodiak 450 front drive axle

Hey all!
I gotta right front drive axle problem. When jacked up the left front wheel spins free and smooth unlike the right side. It well for lack of a better way to explain it I guess it ratchets. Not free and smooth. It does this in neutral. Leading me to believe that its a cv-joint? 4x4 works fine and I don't notice any noise. Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this?

If you had a busted cv it would more than likely make noise in 4x4 or 2x4. becase it is always turning even if 4x4 is not engaged. Check and make sure that none of you boots are damaged. As far as the wheel turning goes it might just be the way the front diff is designed.

I have the same condition on the right front.. I thought it might be a wheel bearing? If it is the cv joint it may be a more serious problem. I haven't noticed any rips or tears in the cv boot. I do ride a considerable amount of mud and water. I had thought if it were a major deal I would have noticed a pull to the right, or something unusual, but everything seems fine. I plan to tear into the right front bearings this weekend and check them to see if they are worn, if not I will keep checking, maybe cv related.

Amazingly the boots are not torn. You may be right about how it's designed. I noticed this last summer when I changed out the wheel bearings. Doesn't seem to be any worse. It's just a little unnerving thinking it's gonna go any time. Any one else with a Bruin,Kodiak 400 or 450 and maybe even the Grizz notice this on there machines? The right front drive axle issue that is.

Thanks for the reply's

Jack your whole quad up and engage the diff lock.....put it in N and turn your front wheels by hand......let us know if it still does it.

Well you can't really tell that it's ratcheting unless the front wheel is off. I just finished installing front bearings, seals and upper & lower ball joints. It's all solid again like new. Still ratchets tho. I'm thinking its just how it is. Thanks for the feedback.
