Default Limited-Slip Front Differential

Please!! What im about to type I mean no offence or any dissrespect to anybody in this forum, I don't know you guys and im not talking about you. All last summer I ran in ATV Poker Runs almost every weekend there were between 600 to 1200 ATV riders there. One thing other guys tell me and I noticed is it always ends up the guys that show up with the biggest, baddest and most expensive ATV always ends up chickening out when the trail route gets rough and scarry. I feel good about myself that I have faith in my riding skill and my ATV that I can ride it anywhere and it will go anywhere any other ATV can go. The bigger belt drive ATV's will pass me on a trail like im standing still as long as it dry, not rainning and they never got it wet, but once they take it thru a deep water hole they always have problems with a slipping belt, and I can understand when these guys that own the belt drives get mad at me when I offer them a tow, they are embaressed and they don't want anybody to see them being pulled out or towed by a little Eiger. I don't know but it seems to me the guys that run the Big Bears, Ranchers, and Eigers look better as skilled riders, but the guys that own the big, bad, shinny 700, 800 super quads are the ones that look unskilled and afraid. Maybe its the bigger quad, they are tougher to ride and control, I don't know for sure, its just what I have seen and I didnt mean to judge and I didn't mean everybody that owns a bigger quad is unskilled or afraid, its just what I have seen. Please,,,, I mean no cut down or offence to anybody in this forum.

One thing you guys never think about is where you ride and what type of trails and conditions you ride ur ATV in. most of you guys live and ride on a flat plain, I live in the mountains of central PA where there are vertical hill climbs, drop off cliffs, rocks and bolders, deep mud and deep, raging rivers to cross, and no offence to anybody here but I bet if most of you guys would chicken out to ride where I ride. Someday drop me an e-mail and transport ur locker ATV and meet me at the mud bowl ride in Madera PA, I will buy everybody dinner and beer, and lets ride that trail and see what urs and my ATV can do. At Madera they tape the 4x4 mud bowl for TV on the Spike Channel., btw; if ur afraid of heights then we can meet at 6 Mile Run, PA and ride along the drop off mountain cliffs, it would be fun watching you guys turn green. ha ha ha
>>>>>>>>>>>&gt ;

I ride in the Mendocino(southernmost cascades) mountains which have a dormant volcano and the Sierra Nevada's which would NEVER be mistaken for PA. Geographically speaking the "hills" of PA are old and worn, tired and lazy........the west coast mts. are fresh, new and sharp...thrilling and dangerous. Define "most of you guys"?? I live 20 minutes from the worlds "smallest mountain range" the Sutter Buttes, too bad you can't ride up there though. I'm 45 minutes from the sierras, 90 minutes from the Mendocino ranges, 2 hrs from Mt. Shasta, three hours from Yosemite/central sierras and 2 hrs from Truckee/Reno. I can be in southern Oregon in about 4 hrs and probably another hour or two to the Florence dunes on the Oregon coast. Sand Mt. is probably 3.5-4 hours away. Pismo is about 5 hrs away as well as Glamis. I'm 1-5 hours from almost every type of riding you can possibly imagine including the flat desert. I'm 3 hrs from the Pacific Ocean and can be at the closest ski resort in 1.5-2 hrs. BTW, I plan on doing some snow riding this year. So why not load up your ATV and bring it west where there are some REAL challenges?

Ive riden in mud for years, and i think i can speak to the reason the guys on the big machines dont get it dirty. Same reason the guys with the big lifted trucks and chrome wheels dont go muddin....its expensive. Some of those utes, go for close to 10 large, then add on the wheels and new tires, and pretty soon the quad is worth more than the tow vehicle that brought it there. Some of those guys are the same guys you find in the bar at the end of the trail..It seems the ones who talk the most crap about 'it ' (wether ' it ' be sex or wheelers) do it the least.
Ive given up on muddin, and take the easy way around the deep holes. I do enjoy watching the other guys trash their stuff, and break things, and then offer up a tow back to their truck or trailer. Ive spent too much time washing , and fixin...to be trashing around in a slop hole for 10 minutes of fun, and 400 bucks worth of repairs.
Been there....done that.

I have researched this subject extensively although I admit to lacking much actual experience. I believe the Polaris all wheel drive system works as well as a full locker when you have plenty of opportunity to spin the rear wheels relative to the front wheels like with snow or ice at which time the Polaris AWD front becomes a very effective full 4 wheel drive system. The Polaris AWD is sometimes better than full locker due to ease of steering in some situations. The Polaris system can be lacking when spinning rear end is difficult such as with sticky tires, big rock, and off camber. Engine braking is another area where differences can be significant. The Polaris and Rincon can be especially difficult in seriously steep situations. My guess is that the Eiger limited slip 4WD is no more effective than the King Quad in 4WD with diff lock turned off. Thanks MotoF150 for this always interesting topic.

The thing about that logic is if you can not spin the rear tires than your not stuck. The Polaris AWD system is never in AWD even if switched to AWD mode ,unless the rear wheel spins at least 10% of a rotation the front wheels are free wheeling without power to them. If you can turn your back wheels without spinning them than you must be in a forward motion and AWD is not needed .

1 more thing you forget... Lighter quad = less footprint.

What does that mean?? I've taken my kodiak thru some pretty nasty stuff. Stuff that a bigger quad going right behind me sank like a rock in. I've got video of the last time it happened... Heck, the only reason I went thru it was to get a better angle on pulling out a AC700 that was horribly stuck. (took 3 big bore quads to winch him out) It just seems like a lot of people don't use logic when comparing quads.... The only thing they tend to factor in is the tire size and how much motor they have to turn them... Oh... and diff-lock...

moto150,i admire your loyalty to suzuki .i as well own a vinson,however you CANNOT compare limited slip to complete lockers when you have less than 30% traction to all 4 wheels,how do you think in all fairness the locker is going to come up short, your thread sounds like your entering a gunfight with knife,good luck to you anyway.

You're right, My '81 Dodge slant 6 has got $1500 wrapped up in it. The quad,...... I quit counting! I am WAY too young to sit back and watch. I have spent $1,550 so far, since my last trip, just to make it better for my next one. Not done yet, I still need to get the 2" lift off of RUBBERDOWN! I am not rich, I just know, that to have big fun, takes big funds! I like coming to a hole and most people go around while I chew through the stuff! That is what drives me!

Than there is also the more weight= more traction theory.

When I use to plow snow with my 350 Big Bear and 450 Foreman, they pushed much better when I put heavy sand bags on the racks. I have a 20hp hydraulic drive 2wd Massey Ferguson garden tractor that weighs maybe 1000lbs and it can drag my 700lb 4wd ATV back wards with all 4 wheels going forward. We all had 2wd pickups onces and know how different they behave with a load on the back vs empty on low traction situations.
