i have a 95 Polaris explorer 400 and bought it as is used and have sense put a lot of time and money in it,i am having problems with the starter making a bad grinding sound and not always staying engaged..i pulled the side cover off and noticed metal shavings and then noticed the flywheels teeth are chewed on the inner side as if the bendix is not fully making contact correctly any help would be appreciated

You either have pull the flywheel off or remove the starter from the bottom of the engine to get to the bendix. Most cases bendix is all that's needed as the flywheel teeth are harder. Here a cheap place on starters and bendix.DB Electrical - Polaris

Not impossible for the switch itself to have a direct short, the connectors or the wiring leading from it. Just a process of checking the wiring out in the connector harness leading down into the main harness area for any bare wires. If these are ok,problem could be in the left control switch itself,or a bad connection at the switch. Electrical grease might help on the connectors. You can tear the switch apart,BUT be prepared to have springs, etc fly around.I've had to replace these switches before. Here's a pdf manual that has a trouble shooting guide along with a wiring schematic for your model that may help. http://gh-ftp.com/ORV%20Manuals/Pola...e%20Manual.pdf
