Just watch Kingdom of Heaven. Not sure if its the first crusade but good movie (imho). Portrays Templars as mercs though which i don't think is true. but it's still entertaining.

The first Crusade was a rout.
The majority of the common soldiers were mercenaries following a devout or misplaced son of a wealthy family. The soldiers lot was hard and not too many of them survived the poor food and living conditions. The stories that have come down make for excellent reading but are often contradictory depending on who wrote them and when.
With the kind of instructor you describe ie: "Narrow minded and unimaginative" (sic) it matters not what really happened. This type of person will not listen to anything but what they want to hear. The way to get along, and get a grade, is to tell them what they want to hear. If you inject irrefutable facts that do not fit with the instructors beliefs you will get slapped down for it.
If you have class notes of what he/she believes that will be your best source. I was unfortunate enough, as has been anyone that has much schooling after kindergarten, to bump heads with way to many of these kinds of instructors. Good luck.

Too bad I can't write my paper about them. Like I said, a narrow minded instructor who provides two questions and will only let us write about his narrow choice of interest. And he is big on trying to bust people for the slightest hint of plagarism, so you have to cite everything, even if you reword it. It's history for crying out loud, there's nothing new someone hasn't already said. Geez. Still avoiding. Better get on it.

What kind of degree are you going for? Or is this learning just for the sake of knowing new things? It's lots of fun to go to school but as I get older I find my tolerance level for instructors of the type you describe is getting much lower. Books seem to be the best for me anymore.

My job entails maintenance of high capacity data circuits for the phone company, but it's a union job with a large corporation and this day and age, those are sadly insecure. One of the current benefits I have is full paid tuition, so I decided to get in gear last year and went back to work towards my degree and some certifications so I have something to fall back on if/when my job goes away. It almost got sent to California last June, so it's looking like it was a good decision. My schedule changed, so I took a couple online classes this quarter just to keep my momentum going.
For a history 100 class, this guy is outta his mind on his expectations and he doesn't really teach much. I maintained a 4.0 all last year, I think this guy is going to blow that. My overall GPA is above 3.5 so I guess I will just have to bite it and accept a C. Next quarter, I should be back on track with the actual classes I want and enjoy. Onward and upward.

The Pit is probably the easiest to find for those who haven't been there before and you can ride around there till everybody shows up. That would be my vote.
