Hatfield and McCoys
It’s about 400 miles from Frederick. Take I-70 W, to I-68 W into WV, then pick up I-79 S until it merges into I-77 S & I-64 W just north of Charleston. Continue on I-77 S & I-64 W into Charleston. As you are crossing the bridge over a river in Charleston, pay close attention to the signs. As you near the other side of the river, while still on the bridge, you have to merge onto the ramp on the far right (watch out for traffic merging in to your lane) to get on Rt 119 S towards Logan. Stay on Rt. 119 S (you will pass the Waterways Trail Head after about 20 minutes or so, the entrance for which is on the left). Follow the signs to Logan, you will get on Rt. 73 and that takes you into town. Get on Rt 10 going south towards the town of Man. You will pass a junction for Rt 17 on the way (the Bear Wallow Trail Head is a little ways up that road on the left).
I consider the town of Man to be the “hub” for the Hatfield McCoy trail system and that is where I generally stay. You can also ride to the Rockhouse Trail Head on your ATVs from anywhere within Man. Some people prefer to stay in Gilbert which is at the other end of the Rockhouse trail system (and puts you a little closer to the Buffalo Mtn / Rev Compton trail head). You can also ride your ATV from Gilbert to the Rockhouse trail system.
For anyone contemplating a trip down there, be sure to make your lodging reservations early, especially during special event times…
