We make a trip up there every summer. Spinreel is my favorite. I actually like the trails the best, as we have lots of open dunes down here, but very little in the way of woods trails.

I moved to Oregon almost 3 years ago. Just bought my first quad since my last 3-wheeler 15 years ago. Still learning where there are trail rides and what is going on. I have been on the dunes in Florence twice now, but that gets old. Looking more for cuising long distance versus getting thrashed and wrecking on one dune. Any ideas, let me know.

We have lots of big dune spots like Glamis, Dumont, and Pismo here in So. Calif., but frankly a one day trip to any of them is all I can really stand. I just prefer flying through the open desert or trail riding.

I do love the trails at Oregon Dunes however........they just are a lot more fun than shooting bowls or drag racing up sand hills all day. What we do is just go riding with the understanding that we WILL GET LOST........and that's how we find new trails and places to ride!

At Spinreel, there is a radio tower in the hills to the east and if you go to the top of any higher hill you can see it. Makes a great landmark when you want to find your way home (it is lit up at night too). Having a GPS wouldn't hurt either.

Ahhh, how I miss Glamis & Comp. at Thanksgiving (the way it was 5-6 years ago). I grew up within a few miles of all the dunes so I spent a lot of time there along with Plaster City/Superstition, Octillo Wells, Dumont and all the other "classics". It's not the same here in Florence. It's only about a 2-3 mile stretch. The dunes close early nighttime and the gates are locked. You have to go back to camp and wait for the next day. I don't think there is the same sense of "family". I'm hoping to get down towards Coos Bay (spinreel) and hopefully find that.

Spinreel has more trails and less open dunes than Florence, but otherwise they are very similar.

In spite of all the problems we have here in So. Calif., it still has to be the best place in the country for riding!
