What do you mean non EPA approved? You mean CARB? As in you have a Red Sticker? Most (if not all) places are open for Red Stickers now. If it's not registered at all, then keep it in your garage.

The high desert would be your best bet. Maybe Wild Wash or someplace like that.
But, I suggest you get a machine that can get legally stickered, because you are missing out on lots of great riding areas, like the San Bernardino Mountains! It's not worth trying to be an outlaw forever.

I don't think I have to tell you that we don't need another wildfire here in So. Calif., so please do be absolutely sure it does have a spark arrestor, before you ride it anywhere!
Wild Wash is up the I-15, between Victorville and Barstow. It is regular BLM land, and not one of the "open areas" like Stoddard or Johnson Valley. I never see any rangers out there, but you never know?????

It is the "Wild Wash" exit. Turn left and cross the bridge, and just drive out and park where you see all the toy haulers parked. Usually, there is a light to moderate crowd.
There are three types of BLM land(Bureau of Land Management): Regular, where you can ride on the already established trails and roads; Open Areas, where you can ride absolutely anywhere you dare whether there is a trail or not; and Wilderness, where you can only hike or ride a horse.
