Anyone been to Black Mountain Recreational Park in harlan county, KY?? I bought a trail map offline.. doens't look that bad.. but I was just curious if anyone had been there or not to see what it's all about.

 

I've been there many times (some pics on my photo page). It's really a special place. The town of Evarts is very ATV friendly and allows you to ride your ATV in town. Also, you'll get the feeling that the locals genuinely like having you there.

The local ATV club (Harlan County Ridge Runners) have a community campfire about every night at the north campground where everyone sits around and tells stories and plans the next day's ride. It's not at all uncommon for the mayor of Evarts to show up too. I've even seen some of the Ridge Runner's wives bring by goodies.

The mapped park is nice and you can easily spend a few days there exploring on your own, but the real fun is on the off-park rides. Talk to the Ridge Runners at the campfire to hookup with one of their guided rides. They are very accommodating of various skill levels.

Also, you can't beat free.

 

Yeah i've got family down there in harlan county it just really hard to get ahold ofthem.. I know they ride there but I never get a chance to see them. Thanks for the info.. I will have to plan a trip there sometime in the near future. Appreciate it.

 

You said it all. I really like the place. Been on the ride to the top of Black Mountain. I would tell everyone to go and Ride. It is a 6 hour drive for me and I have four times. Ride the park one day and hook up with the club and ride the Off Part the next day.

 

i live in louisville ky and was wandering about directions, i see that its in harlin ky but where do you go and where to park to un load? and who does the camping there. can we camp anywhere or is there a camp[ cround? is there a address for any of this for me to check out mapquest? thanks for all the help!!!!!!!

 

cleroy, the Harlan County Ridge Runners website http://kyoutdoors.org will answer all your questions and concerns-especially check out the forums section. In the City of Evarts, there are 2 campgrounds in town with electric/water hookups and a dump station, and you can also camp on the mountain as well. There are a few places in town to park & unload as well. There is a city ordinance in Evarts that allows you to legally ride your ATV throughout the town on city streets-just wear a helmet and obey all traffic laws and you'll be OK. You can ride from wherever you unload to the trailhead, as well as to gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, bank/ATM, etc. Best part about it is that riding is FREE. Over 8,000 acres of on-park riding, and around 50,000 acres of off park riding. The off-park riding does require a guide, which is FREE as well. If you stay in Evarts, once you unload, you never have to load back up until it's time to go home. As far as mapquest goes, just put Evarts, KY 40828 as your destination, and will give you a general idea of how far of a drive you have. I live in Northern KY and it takes me approx. 4 hrs. to get there.

 

My son and I just got unloaded from a trip to Evarts. Had a off park ride [free] courtesy of Ridge Runner as a guide went 103 miles in 12 hours got all the way over to the Virginia border and back on White Rock , was an interesting and educational ride and as always in Evarts the best people in the world to ride with. here is alink to the pics we took 140 miles in two days first day the 18 werei n park .
