Default Mammoth Area This Weekend??

Wonder if any of ya'll ventured up yonder this late in the winter. I have a trip planned for Thursday, but the campgrounds are all closed up high. Any suggestions on places to stay and ride from? Glass Creek / Hartley Springs are the best, but rangers said they're closed.
I'm thinking of driving up from Bishop to ride and camping in the lower elevations. Other option is to pull off one of the dirt roads past the Mammoth turn off the 395 and find a spot to park the 'hauler for a couple of days.
Any suggestions/experience this late in the season is much appreciated!

We go in on Deadman Creek Road past the campground, and do remote camping along the creek. You can pick up a lot of trails, right from camp.

Personally, I would stay in Bishop (we camp along Buttermilk Road), and do the Buttermilk, Coyote, Silver/Wyman Canyon, and Wheeler Ridge rides. Trouble is, you have to trailer the quads to some of these, and if you are in a haller, most folks can't do that unless they can get them in the back of the truck. Great reason to go dual-sport motorcycle!!!

Thanks Recon,
We ended up camping off a spur road on Benton Crossing. BLM has open camping, says the rangers in Bishop. Holiday campground was also open, but didn't afford the riding opportunities that the east side of the 395 does. From Benton, we wiggled our way north to the tunnell then had access to Mammoth and all the great trails on the west side of the 395!
