The DNR trail that runs from the North East side of Norway to Carney Lake is indeed terrible. I believe that the trail designer was the Marquee de Sade. It had to have been laid out in the winter over the frozen tundra and swamp because in the late spring it is virtually impassable. Sections include bottomless black muck, numerous side-hill off cambers serious enough to slide you into the trees on the side of the hills while riding as slowly and as cautiously as you can. Can you say challenging?
But... the good news is the numerous logging roads and trails that comprise the rest of the County. Literally hundres of miles are available. If there isn't a fence or a locked gate you are allowed to go there.
The "official" DNR trail seems to be a plot to discourage the faint of heart from taking advantage of the great outdoors, and encourage riders to ride elsewhere.

Thor, Mac,
I appreciate the the responses. We are definately going to Gogebic, and Ontanogin for some canoeing. The Black, and Presque Isle Rivers are priorities for this trip.
I know there are no designated Orv trails around there, but I'd like to get an idea of riding in the area.
I'll be sending off requests to the local Chamber of Commerce on camping and any other info they can provide.
The Hurley, Ironwood festival sounds like a good time. I told the other half about it last night, and She's putting in for vacation today. haha.

Lower michigan isn't all that bad. The gladwin trail is good. The last time I was there parts of the trail were under 3+ feet of water and lotsa mud. The trail was groomed and we were haulin. I took my polaris to the mounds the first week I had it. I sunk it in a water hole!!! have't been back since. I live in saginaw.

Dusty, there is a trail system in the making that a fellow name Jim Firus (906)575-3547 is delveloping in connection with private land owners and State trail (snowmobile) system in the western U P. I tried calling him to see what the latest is but haven't heard back from him yet. This info is under ATV connection TRAIL section, Michigan, T.R.A.L.E. U.P. I have camped at the Porkies state park and is a great area to see and has beautiful scenic trails to hike on and canoing but no atv trails to ride on.
