What is an ATV safety Certificate? This is required to ride at Sam Houston State Park but I don't know where to get one or what it is! I tried calling the number but it's just a fast busy signal, probably took the phone off the hook, it's Friday you know.

Thanks,
Mitch

You shouldn't need the safety certificate if you have a valid drivers license. The certificate is for kids from 12-16.

An ATV Safety Certificate is a certificate that you receive after you have taken a safety training class with the ATV Safety Institute. This is a free class to you if you purchased a new ATV. You may also be eligable to receive a cash incentive from the manufacture of your ATV. ($75.00 to $100.00). The certificate you recieve may also get you a discount on your insurance. Many States, including Michigan will not legally allow anyone under the age of 16 to ride a ATV without taking the 4hr ATV Rider course from ASI.In order to qualify for the incentives offered from the manufactures, you MUST[purchased] be on the correct size ATV for your age.

6-11yrs old-under 70cc
12-15yrs old-not over 90cc
16 on up,over 90cc

The problem with ASI's Safety course is that very FEW kids under the age of 16 ride a 90cc ATV,so they would NOT qualify for the incentives nor can the instructor allow anyone OUTSIDE of the RECOMMENDED age/cc to take part in the Safety Course.Whats happening is that we miss these alot of these kids.

Now,in Michigan, there is no restrictions on engine size for kids.As long as they have a Safety Certificate and are 12 yrs old and are adult supervised, they can ride what they want.MATVA,or the Mich All Terrain Vehicle Assoc now teaches the kids outside of ASI's age/cc requirements. Its a good thing, they dont miss any kids this way.

So, this would not be necessary for me (31 years old)? I thought it was something that I needed so that I could ride in State Parks or on public/gov't owned property.

Thanks,
Mitch

Mitch,
laws vary from state/state.I'd check your LOCAL laws to be sure, but I dont think you'll need a certificate at the age of 31.

Hey Mitch
You are right, you have to have the training class in order to get the permit to ride in Sam Houston National Forest. Call your dealer and get the number. It is amazing what how much you think you know, then it turns out that you don't. Your wife can take it also at no cost, and most of the time they have quads that are on loan from dealers for them to ride

I don't want to take some BS class, all they really want is money anyway. I'll buy the sticker or whatever it is, but defensive driving on a quad doesn't sound like much fun.

Thanks,
Mitch
