Default Wolverine and SNOW

OK all, winter will be here befor we know it, and the wife wants an atv, but we want one that she could ride during the winter time on the roads when the snow emergency plans get put into effect. At the same time she wants to be able to keep up with the guys on the trails during the summer. I have read from previous posts that the wolverine is up to just about any task, but there were not many comments about snow. HOW does this thing perform in it?? How deep can you go, is the motor up to it only being a 350??? I have a raptor, and am considering buying 2 of these and keeping it as well.... the only other machine I was considering was the grizzly but its too exspensive to buy 2 of them, but you could fit 2 people on it. With little mud protection, how does it handle the snow as far as packing up under the pegs/fenders, I wanna go deep with this thing, just need to know if it can handle it!! Thanks guys!!

The Wolverine does OK in the snow. How deep of snow it can handle varies with the density of it, however you are pretty much done once it gets up to about bumper height, as then you are limited by ground clearance where the front tires can’t get a good bite on firm material because you're packing snow with the belly of the quad.

The Grizzly is definitely more fun in the snow (because of more ground clearance, more power and the auto transmission) and can probably handle about 4” or more snow than the Wolverine. The Kodiak would do well too as it has a similar design as the Grizzly, just not as much power.

The Wolverine with it’s heal guards / foot pegs do not present a problem with snow build up as much as the floorboards of the Grizzly. During snow outings with the Grizzly I have to stop from time to time to clear the snow from the floorboards to keep my feet from slipping off. Not a problem with the Wolverine.

In comparison the Honda Rubicon with it’s more open floorboard design doesn’t have a snow build up problem like the Grizzly does. I would imagine other Hondas with floorboards would be designed similar (they have much larger holes in the floorboards so the snow falls through instead of piling up).

So I guess it’s really up to your wife. If she’d rather not shift, forget the Wolverine. It’s a lot more fun to just push the throttle and go with the fully auto transmissions (you will also have more sliding fun with the auto too since it’s so easy to pour on the power).

BTW I may be wrong but I didn’t think it was legal to ride ATVs on public roads in MD even when snow emergency plans are in effect? Although I know some people who have done it and neighborhood policemen (also ATV owners) that have looked the other way while it was being done. Also two-up on a single user quad is not a good idea especially if you plan on sliding around (in case you hit something that suddenly gives you more traction where you may need some quick body counter-action).

Also that really deep stuff that we got last year was too much even for my Griz with 27” 589s mounted. Had to wait for it to blow around or melt some before riding in it.
