Default How to improve Raptor Stock Carbs?

Ba01raptoraz, while I am not yet incorporated, I plan on obtaining my LLC license & build a website under the name Doogieracing.com
I have spent countless hours/dollars jetting the Raptor carbs.
As a result, I will be able to show on a Dyno someday that you can get good HP out of the stock carbs when jetted properly. Recently I read about converting the Yamaha Banshee to CV carbs for better low/mid response. I'll post that info when I find it. Most street bikes use CV carbs for good top end performance as well so you really can't go wrong with them when jetted properly. Also, when my webpage is finished, I will show my HP/torque numbers for any engine/carb mods that I have made. I have discovered that Dyno results are exspensive to obtain but well worth the results/peace of mind.

For $100, I would simply jet your carbs to perfection on my own Raptor. There would be no permanent mods done. I would simply need your current temp/alt conds & would provide a few spare jets/advice for any changes necessary. Most of what I do here can be obtained from hours of experience & or reading previous posts. Even with that info avail, I have found that there is no replacement for experience, or is it displacement? LOL...

For $150 I would jet them to perfection, then I would improve the air flowing thru the carbs to improve the low & mid range. Then I would dial in the jetting by increasing the fuel delivered as well. The advantage of these mods is that I add both air/fuel to improve the low/mid for more power whereas other techniques restrict air/fuel flow to improve the jetting but the end result is less power. In other words, some mods improve jetting but reduce HP, whereas my mods improve both jetting & HP!

The midrange mod is permanent but it is well worth the time/money since it compensates for low rpm air speed & turbulence that occurs when you remove the airbox lid. Besides, as long as you run for performance, you will never want to go back!

I will not discuss the mods in any further detail in the same sense that a professional engine builder would not teach you how to port/polish a head. Currently I am not pursuing this type of work to get rich since I have a full time job. However, my love for the sport has cost me a lot of money & time away from my family & I feel that it is time to offer my services at a cost.

If you really want to learn about jetting, get busy reading, thinking, & jetting till it hurts & your wife is ready to leave you & you kids are mad as well. When you figure it out, you will be happy to know that you can jet your own bike or anybody elses in no time. If you just want to enjoy riding, then let me or someone else do the work for you. I talked to Craycraft on the phone & have followed many of their posts & I am sure they can do a good job as well. I have no experience using the FCR mechanical carbs & don't plan on trying them until the need arrises. Perhaps when I install a 727 kit, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Good luck,
Doug

I don't see how jetting someone elses carb on your quad would help anything.......being as all quads are different........
example
me and my friend both have 03 rappys.....he had an alba FULL system and I had my gutted stock silencer........
his should have required more fuel and we jetted both with the DJ kit
we did the recomended jetting and he had 146/148 and I was running 144/146
his plug looked perfect and ran perfect........strong all the way through.......
but mine was still lean...I had to go up 146/148 for it to run correctly.....
exact same needle/mixture screw settings........
just different bikes and TOTALLY different exhausts......
the moral is......he should have required more fuel than mine........and it didn't........

They are not talking of jet sizes. They are modifying these carbs in different ways than just slapping in a different main jet. The main jet you use after these mods are done will still need to be determined as well as needle position etc. jmo

I have the mods done and i see a big diffrence,i have a few jetting changes and like the power so far,it revs to the moon and when i am pinned in 5th it just keeps going..

Alll i can do is tell you guy's to do something, with rods going like they do take care of it now instead of paying for it later....

I have had my bike on 10 runs and it's getting better every time......

Bigscary, you really don't need to copy & paste my post, I know what I said, it took up too much space the first time don't you think? I am already long winded when I write & I didn't think I needed to say it but I would jet the carbs "on my atv" based on the customers current setup. That means if you use a lid with 1 or 2 holes or a half of a lid or whatever, I would use the same setup to jet your carbs. Trust me, I tried them all, you have no idea how much time I spent on it. I have lids that vary from just the flaps cut out all the way to just enough lid that it holds the stock filter in place. I have more than one pipe, slip on, etc. I would jet the carbs anyway you like but from my seat of the pants experience & Dyno proven results, I would advise the customer to run with no lid, an aftermarket filter, a full exhaust(modified engine) or a slip on(stock engine), & my jetting for best power. If the customer insisted on using a home made lid that looked like swiss cheese, then I would ask them to send it with their carbs & go from there. Its not hard to figure out. As far as charging $100 for basic jetting, if you reread the original post you should be able to extrapolate that I said anybody could figure out basic jetting by experience & by reading previous posts. The advantage I offer is the time/money I spent on it. If you just want to ride & let someone else figure it out, I'd be glad to do it for $100. Am I going to get rich by charging $100-$150 & spending 2-3 hrs on it, nope! But, do I intend to give away my secrets after all the blood, sweat, & tears, nope!

I also went on to mention that to really get the most out of your carbs, a permanent mod is required that would cost $150. I know I can't offer the Dyno proven results just yet, but I will in the future. How many other people are even mentioning that? Oh wait a minute, the Dyno jet kit does show a dyno graph on the front cover of their kit, too bad its for the wolverine or some other atv. Isn't the Raptor & wolverine the same? Nope! No problem says Dyno jet, just move the clip up or down until you get it right, ya right. How about I move it based on the actual problem & or conditions or how about I do what is right & leave it in the 3rd position & jet the other carb components correctly. If you ever read any carb theory you will understand what I am talking about. Without an exact quote it goes something like this, "if you are jetted correctly, moving the clip up or down one position should have little impact on your jetting". What that means is, if you need to change the clip position to get it right, you don't have the mains or other components jetted correctly. If a certain combination of external components requires changing the clip position to get it right, then its something to put in your bag of tricks. Now you're getting somewhere! That's where the experience comes in at. You can't buy that kind of experience in a kit. I don't sell a kit, I sell experience. Craycraft sells experience, so does Trinity, CT racing, LRD, etc etc. How come only one guy at LRD does all the head work? Why doesn't he bottle up that experience & sell it in a kit & let some 16 year old high school kid crank out the head work for $10 an hour? Experience baby! Don't jump to conclusions, jump puddles. ba01raptoraz, just what sandjunkie said. He was very helpfull in helping me, everything from choosing a carb to trying to find a way to put it on a Raptor. As far as installation goes Do a search for Lectron in the Yamaha forum with my name as the au.... N/M I'll find it.....click here for Lectron info. I will have my pictures back tommorrow and will be posting somewhere. Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll make sure you get a link to the pictures.
