How to improve Raptor Stock Carbs?
#31
This is coming from a guy who has a 12:1 compression 686 with a stage II hot cam , head porting, ect. This is what I'm saving my $ for because I'll tell ya the stock carbs just won't flow enough fuel at minimum all the rest of the changes are for more HP and easier tuning. I've messed with these carbs needles, jeting mains, pilots and mixture screws for days and months. I've came to the conclusion that to make them run on the bottom RPM there is not enough fuel in the bowls for wide open runs. If you change it to run wide open then it runs like crap down low. There is just no happy medium for both without modding the carbs.
Think about it you mod your motor for all this extra HP and let your stock fuel system try to keep up? Not me man! (extreme situation) You could run the carbs out of fuel while turning 7500 RPM and melt all the money you just spent!

there is noway i will run my bike without the modds to the carbs
Ugintel, its really not sad. If you gave away all of your speed secrets, if you have any, then everybody would be as fast as you. How would there be any compition between people, and we all know its compition that drives us all.

Secrets are secrets and I wouldn't give them away either. I would think that if you have your engine built by a builder and it would require these carb mods to run correctly and safely (engine safe) that the builder would discuss this with you so you can make an educated decision to purchase or not. jmo

Bob has spent many, many, many hours on this. Different carbs have been on quite a few built raptors around here to do the research. In all reality Bob makes pennies a hour. lol
lowbowtie summed it up the best.
We have spent days making run after run and changes after changes. Bob started on them before the june races and just finished them a few weeks ago. I can tell you we have tried all types of needles, sanded on needles, broke needles, walked on pins and needles and the finished product looks great.
Rod failures in my opinion will less likely with the mods. Bob is running the carbs that he modds on raptor. Those that have craycraft motors should be able to just stick them back on and go. The rest will be a little more difficult, but there are lots of raptors in various stages of built to be used on. After you have spent thousands on the motor you might as well drop a few more 100's and have peace of mind and a stronger running quad to boot. Or if the 300 dollar fee is to high at least buy FCR's

When I bought FCRs, I gave Bob my stock carbs to help the R&D effort. Not everyone can afford FCRs and unmodified stock carbs will not cut it with a race gas 686. After countless hours on the phone with Bob and fiddling with the stock carbs, I learned a few things. Even if you think it's running OK, you guys that are still running stock carbs on a built Raptor are flirting with disaster.
