I hunt in very steep hills in Southwest Mississippi, the 00 Kodiak has enough power for me and I am 6'1 and 300 #'s. I usually have my wife aboard with rifles and lots of gear and have no problem. I have ridden a friends SP 500 and it is smoother riding with the independent rear axle but was harder to steer, both have stock tires. I have had several atv's, Big Bear before the 00 Kodiak and I am very impressed with the 00. On several mudrides the SP 500 with aftermarket tires ran circles around me (and every one else) in the thick mud. However I bought mine for hunting and it does great. Not as noisy as the Grizzly but then not as powerful either.

In Huntnut's post he implies that a Kodiak cannot hop logs or stumps. This is why he purchased a Grizzly. I don't understand that comparison. Heck, any quad can go over a log. Saying that a Y2Kodiak can't get off the trail to get a deer because it can't jump a stump or fallen tree is nonsence. I had a Kawasaki 300 Bayou 4X4 that could do that.
Both machines are good.

I've had my kodiak for awhile now it's awesome!!! I have had no problems i think this under powered stuff is a bunch of crap at the last dice run i was on i winched out a griz that was stuck in the mud on a steep side hill, that was after i went through the mud around him and got to the top!! Under powered when compared to my f250 maybe!!

I just purchaced two new Kodiaks for my wife and I, I've owned and ridden ATV for years, both Hondas and Yamahas. The "under power thing" is "BS"!It's generally not the ATV it's the operator that's lacking! The Kodiak has more than enough power to take you anywhere a ATV will or should go! I have a friend with the Sportsman 500 that I ride a lot with in some very steep mountain country and most of the time when coming down very steep hills he's breaking and slideing while I about have to give my Kodiak gas.The transmission and compression system on the Kodiak is awsome! On the level it's a push with the bigger 500, neck and neck. You won't be unhappy with the Kodiak, I was debating between the Grizz or the Kodiak and I'm glad I went with the Kodiak!
