How do you know what octane to run?
Timing of the motor also plays and important role in octane/compression situations. An example of this for instance my DS650 motor has the same 9.7:1 compression ratio and it requires 91-93 octane. Now my cousins's YZF440 motor is 12.5:1 compression and he can run regular 87 octane fuel without a problem. Now these are two different motors with different timing. I'm not exactly sure but if I can recall the more advanced the timing is in a motor, higher octane fuel is needed. So a motor with more retarded timing will allow you to run lower octane fuel.... Assuming 2 motors have the same compression ratio, but one has higher advanced timing will need higher octane, and the one with the more retarded timing will be able to run lower octane.
every stock quad will run on premium unleaded but 11.5:1 is ABOUT the limit for 93 octane but depending on what quad it is you can sometimes run a 12-12.5:1 on 93 octane.... It's about the timing.
