Default Helmets? yes or No

Me again... Hey, I just had a thought... I am sure that a majority of riders out there that have commented on this thread probably have more than one helmet laying around the house. Why not carry a spare with you and give it to the next person you se without one... do it on the friendly... let them know you care about them... You never know, you just might save a life.

I was out at the local dealers the other day and watched a kid and his dad go through the process of buying a new dirt bike. By the sounds of it, it must have been the first one that they had ever had. After the purchase, the kid wanted to show his dad the cool helmets they had on the display. The dad refused to look at them because he said he didn't have the money for one. Now why buy a kid a dirt bike without having a hundred bucks to get him a helmet? Something wrong there....

Any way I told the kid to pick one out and dropped the plastic on the counter.... the kid was exstatic.. the dad a little embarassed, but I figure the kid deserved the best chance he could have in staying alive.

I told the dealer to let me know if he ever ran into another case where a buyer couldn't afford a helmet for their child... and I'd pay him for it. Just tell them it came in the deal... I sure hope those of us that are so adamant are willing to go the extra mile and put our money where our mouth is.
I would like to shake your hand.........You are a good man and I agree with your post.

I second that, very good thing you did there my friend! That will be even more of a reason for that kid to wear his helmet. Heres another suggestion, why don't the manufacturers start building/selling the quads and dirtbikes with matching helmets? Of course a little price would have to be added in the process, but think of the positive effect this would have not only on the ATV communitys image, but on peoples safety. Maybe more people would wear them because 1. They paid for them, might as well use them, or 2. It looks cool because it matches thier quad, or 3. They have enough common sense to know that thier chances of survival are much better with one on.

Here is my thought, I figured when I was buying a quad...what the hell I just spent 6k on a quad, what is an extra 200 or 300 dollars for a helment, then i get home and find myself not wearing it and I think...I just spent a crap load on a helment, why ain't i wearing it?? Get the best out of your money and wear the damn thing, something might happen when you least expect it. Anyways, that is my little opinion. Brad

Thanks guys for the kind words...... I know this is off thread a bit, but although many of us ride by ourselves a lot, many also like to ride with groups from time to time. Just about anywhere you go, you run into one riding club or another...

For the clubs out there, why not take this on as a personal mission to work with dealers and other riders to make sure the kids have a way to get a helmet? For one thing, it would be something good that the local news agencies could report on in a positive way... much like when the bikers started their toy rides, long before the Marines had their toys for tots programs, ... why can't we as a group start a helmet thing for kids? Just think of the positive publicity the manufacturers could gain if they chose to get involved... I'd sure hope that the lobbiests and the insurance companies would put their money where their mouth is and join in too.

Insurance companies, as well as many retailers and local government agencies started programs to provide car seats for needy families that couldn't afford one for free.... Why not helmets?

It only takes an idea... and someone with the fortitude to make it work....

Dragginbutt...YOU ARE THE MAN!! SERIOUSLY!!

Another thought...automobiles come standard with seat belts and air bags. Why not quads and motorcycles come standard with a DOT approved helmet?

Always!!!!

I don't preach but usually bi@#h about it to myself and friends when I see kids on quads or bikes with no helmets, no shirts, etc. It makes me sick to my stomache.
