Helmets? yes or No
#71
Well Ol' dragginbutt has a word for this... Stupid... Stupid not to, Stupid hurts, yada yada. I think everyone has that one time they can reflect back to, concerning wearing a helmet and what would have happened if they didn't have it on...and they scared themselves bad enough to always ride with one.
Now where I have a problem, is when some of us say we wear them unless we are in our own yard. Well what makes you think the grass in the back yard will save your life any better? The ground still is hard... the machine you are on still weighs the same too, and trees or other stationary objects will remain stationary... so if you hit them, why do you think it will not hurt? The answer is, you are JUST as likely to get hurt in your back yard as you are out in the woods.
You have to look at the big picture here..... Congress, insurance companies, cops etc pay close attention to statistics... and statistically, you have a better chance of survival or reduction in injuries if you are wearing the proper gear. For those of you that do not wear the skid lids religously, you are adding to the kind of statistics that will eventually force the "Powers" to save us from ourselves and eliminate the sport altogether...
Now I for one am here to tell you that there was a time when ATV's almost were legislated out of existance.... if we do not police ourselves, Old large Uncle will... and that is not a good thing....
I am only looking at a few more years that I can ride my bikes, but you young guys have a lot more to lose than I do. I have years of memories that you may only get to read about... so you had better think twice about that wheelie you did on your street to impress the girls next door, or the short ride in the back yard you took without the head gear... before it is too late...
Believe me, there are very powerful lobbies in Washington, DC that would like to see the ATV go away for good... DON'T Give them any more fuel for their fires....

TRX440- I like the no insurance no pay theroy but it will not work. A guy crashes his quad and is unconsious and the ambalance shows up to take him to the hospital, but since he was not wearing a helmet they know they will not get paid so they put him at the curb. lol A lawyer sues and said the helmet rip off his head on impact due to faulty nylon strap made in china by the lowest bidder. Layer wins billon dollar claim.
Rules and law are only made to be broken so citations can be written and city/federal governments can collect fines to keep there department open. The land of the free gets a little less free everyday. Even if it was mandated that you have to wear a helmet you will never have 100 percent compliance 100 percent of the time. This country runs because of idiots and law breakers give others plenty of jobs
Themez- what are you majoring in?

Well as some of the people that have seen my last video (Craycraft 686 races). I was not wearing a helmet. I basically got my a$$ chewed about 8 times for not wearing one. Honestly I wear a helmet about 90% of the time. Dunes I always wear one, sometime I think I should sitting around camp! Cinders I do sometimes get lazy.
There are hardly any people at that location, so I do not worry about other drivers, and I am an extremely mellow driver unless drag racing, no jumping and that sort. I'm usually at about 1/4 throttle.
NO EXCUSES...we should all wear helmets

I agree the non-treatment thing wouldn't work here, it was just how things would be in other countries that let you pay the punishment for stuff like that. Think ... Pakistan or something. I bet if they had a helmet law and you broke it, they'd let ya die. That was just my point.

Physical Anthropolgy? Stumpped me twice on that one. Can't spell it and do not know what it means. I wasted my time at college in the 80's drinking and chasing women. Sounds like your going to going to beat up plants? or be a farmer. If it is a farmer maybe you can get in on the government programs and we can all support you.

Anthropology is the study of man. Physical means ... our physical selves. Mostly it deals with fossil hominids and their evolution, but also with primates to an extent. I do the human thing, studying Australopithecenes, early Homo, and Neanderthals.

I always wear my helmet when racing or going for a ride. The exception, as most on this post have said, is when I am loading/unloading or cruising around in the yard.
14mins, sounded like you started this post because someone might have been giving you a hard time about wearing your helmet. If it was a friend, you might want to listen to them. I believe I am recalling it correctly to say that after ernie's crash into the side of the trailer, you of all people should know that bad things can happen at any time. If you dont want to wear one, thats fine and I and others should respect your wishes and not preach to you. But i dont want you to tell me not to try to keep my loved ones safe.
I apologize if I seem harsh, I do not mean to be disrespectful or simply a dick. I just think that preaching to me about how other unsafe activities not requiring helmets justify your actions is just as bad or worse than me preaching to you to wear one in the first place. JMHO.
