We ATV riders have been shafted over the years getting detuned, "couple year old" dirtbike engines and crappy suspension in our quads - however that is finally beginning to change --- but, if you expect ATVs to perform with dirtbikes you'll always be disappointed.

The problem is to develop power proportionately you will have to go to a larger engine in the ATV, which adds weight and complicates the chassis (larger engines require larger, taller, and/or wider chassis). It seems most in the racing community have found that the 450 4 strokes and 250 class 2 strokes make a nice compromise between power, weight, and chassis considerations.
Why not just state the obvious? LOL

There is no reason ATV's can't have as much power as dirtbikes. Even today we are getting the dutuned versions. Can power be made in small engines? What about the Aprilia Vtwin 450. I need say no more.

Thomez,
What he is saying is that, the Aprilla V twin will always be faster in a 2 wheeler than a 4 wheeler. I thought it was obvious?

That was what I was thinking. That is also why I said they should be able to have the same amount of power but didn't state that they should be able to go as fast with that power because 4 wheels will always weight more than 2.

There is no excuse for the power gap except referring to the shaft. Or maybe the fact that MX dirt bikers do nothing else with them while you can't expect many owners of YFZ's and R's to do the same... ?

I think it has more to do with the fact that any idiot can hop on a quad and break his neck, hell I know good quad riders that are total squids on a 2 wheeler, they are scared of them. Nobody is scared of a quad.
I could be wrong, and it might have more to do with engineering and the ability of a quad to stay together or something, just my opinion.

let them cash in...they've deserved it.

the debating is good and healthy, all have atleast one good point on average (per post). but, bottom line is everyone loves the brand they own and are prepared to defend it. thats to be expected. taking Jabs at each other for that is pointless and just to damn easy.

when continuing this debate...be mindful that some of you are comparing these to quads in stock form and other are basing there opinions on what the pro's are riding. which is of course, comparing apples to oranges.

i think deep down we are all really pleased with where the indusrty is going as well as the pro circuit. Manufacturers are supporting and paying. im sure turn outs for these events will begin to inflate as well as the purses. this should also effect the amount of talent...inspiring more to stick with it as well as increasing sponsors.

Tomez, be patient. these are the first real attempts at production race worthy 4 strokes. this is just the begining. the machines WILL get better in time. who knows what the future brings...maybe KTM? maybe the return of the cannondale in some form or another? these are very exciting times...and we're fotunate to have front row seats as this new era in ATV's begins to take off and get momentum.

races will be won on inferior quads...thats why sponsors search for and back the right riders.

but one thing is for certain...quads will never be on the same level as dirt bikes. apples and oranges my friend.

IMO: the YFZ is the best selection today...Yamaha will again get my money. even though they may have fallen short on customer service. i can't deny the joy the Raptor brought me on track and trails. and get me out front ALMOST evrytime. for that reasone alone...i'll give the YFZ a chance.

i will say one good thing about Honda before i go though. i really do appreciate the red and yellow plastics. it makes stocking them through the woods so much easier. J/K

I was wrong about the front rezzies on the shocks and i corrected that statement. The new R is still going to be a dissapoint from the standpoint that honda was last to the dance and did not do anything special when THEY SHOULD have. The carb will be replaced on most built ones. It is a far cry from the motor cycle verision.

Here is a report that sheds a bit of light on the race.

Clearchannel Pro Quad Stadium Series Round 1

Anaheim, CA

FARR FINISHES A RESPECTABLE THIRD AT STADIUM SERIES OPENER

Team Honda rider, Tim Farr, unveiled his new TRX450R in front of a sold-out crowd at the opening round of the Clearchannel Pro Quad Stadium Series this past weekend. The new Honda drew enormous attention and was the talk of the event. Thirty-six riders vied for the chance to be one of the seventeen to make it to the main show. Farr won his qualifier to ensure his spot in the main event. He then went on to win the heat race, beating Kawasaki's Jeremy Schell, by a comfortable margin. The second heat race was won by Team Suzuki's Doug Gust. Tensions were high as the big guns lined up for their first main event of the year in front of the 50,000+ crowd. Farr grabbed the holeshot on his Honda TRX450R followed by Keith Little in second and Gust in third. The three veterans distanced themselves from the field and put on a show of their own. With two laps remaining, Farr rubbed tires with a lapped rider in a rhythm section and it was just enough to let Little sneak past. Clearly disturbed, Farr negotiated a turn a bit too wide and Gust tucked inside on the last lap. At the checkers, it was Little with the Round 1 win followed by Gust and Farr.

"Third is a respectable finish, but we came here to win. We will be more then ready for round two," said Farr following the race.

2 greatest things in the atv world:

1. When honda loses to Yamaha.

2. When the prairie gets stuck and the Yamaha's and Polaris drive right by!!!!!

All I can say is WOW, that is Inspiring.

Come on, you didn't just make that up did you? You are truly wasting all of your vast knowledge on these Forums.

I actually lost 7 IQ points just from reading that. Good Grief.
