how come none of the newer quads like the yfz and 450r, have 5 speeds when back in the day everything was 6?

Nah, 4 strokes have the torque to pull lower gears. Its like old cars being 3 speeds, they had gobs of torque. Now a days its 10,000+ rpm rice burners with more hp than torque, so they all have 5 or 6 speeds, with much tighter gear ratios than the 3 speed.

4 strokes do have 6speeds....they just dedicate one for reverse.
