What exactly is the function of the speed sensor?

Does anyone know for sure what exactly the speed sensor does? Is it necessary? Can you run without it? There is a guy on EBAY selling a block off plate for the speed sensor, check it out.

I would like to get rid of as much of the extra crap as possible for racing and ease of cleaning/maintenance. What will not having the speed sensor do to my engine or CDI?
Thanks!

Well, I'd imagine you lose your rev limiter. Other than rev limit, I don't think the CDI uses that signal to trigger the spark. If it did, his block off would keep the motor from running.
I'm curious too, why doesn't someone buy one and let us know:-)

I just bought one. I will let you know if it works. I will be using it with a Dyna CDI box, so I will call them first to see if their CDI needs a signal from the Speed Sensor. The dude is charging me $10 for shipping on that tiny little piece that he could have dropped in an envelope and mailed to me for $1. I think he is just trying to make some more money. JMO

After thinking about it,
its named speed sensor, so it must be a remnant from the street bike days of the motor.. disconnect it and it doesnt do jack.. maybe they kept it on incase the gov't said they gotta have a speedo? I dunno,, its a piece of junk we dont need is all i know.

On a kawasaki, the speed sensor is used to control the timing.
the speed sensor looks at the teeth on a gear in the transmission. every tooth that goes by is a pulse, the number or pulses in a minute is the frec. the CDI reads the frec. and adjust the time.
That is why on a p650 or p700, kawasaki uses it to retard the time on bottom and top end to detune the motor.
I think the yammy uses a similar system to detune or at lease as a trigger for the CDI to control the timing.
