Hmm, where to begin.
420ex, most people who arent die hard honda fans would skip a 1 year older honda w/ small bore increase when a newer, faster even when stock, well modded, nearby z for only 250 dollars difference is availible. Oh, and by the way, the axle was never a problem for the raptors, and the trannies were fixed in 02. The one ways go bad from starting it in gear, something you shouldnt really do anyway.
That said, the raptor is really cheap, and is the fastest, but only by a small margin over the z. Both bikes are great, but the raptor seems like the better deal. That is of course, assuming condition is good on both. Obviously a bike in poor condition is not worth a few hundred dollars difference. Good luck with your choice.

If I had a choice I will look at the following.
1st. Who was the rider? If it’s a kid that races and likes to drag and ride real hard, like mx tracks and stuff, I will not take his bike, If you have an older guy, that took care of his bike and rode for fun. Then it’s a good buy.
2nd. Mods are a no go area. It means one thing. The owner liked to race and that means the motor have some work done to it, and you do not know how good a job was done on the motor. It might look great, run great and blow up in your face in a weeks time. Then what?
From the sound of things, the Stock Raptor is a good bet, purely because it’s a stocker, but look at the owner and see what it was used for.

Go with the Z if it was well taken care of and not modded to much. Its practically a liquid cooled 400ex with more hp. Ive ridden a modified and stock raptor and i am please with its power,ergs, and handling but i also heard of problems from cheezy a arms to carbs being blown off the manifolds. Plus you gotta take the tank and plastic off just to jet two carbs.
